Today is March 1st, the time of the year when we celebrate Women in Construction. The entire month celebrates women, but specifically the week of March 3-9, 2024. It is a time to highlight all the great initiatives and work of women within the industry. Likewise, it is a time that brings to the fore the opportunities that are available to women in construction. Women in Construction Week traces the history of women in construction, their challenges, and the ways they’ve been able to overcome them. The holiday is observed to appreciate the women who have taken the bold step to enter the construction industry and also to encourage those willing to make similar commitments.
For those of us in the construction world, we make up 10.9% of the workforce, the remainder are men. Women have made significant strides forward, as we continue to move ahead in this industry, however, we need to support of others in our arena. There are many women construction organizations out there, however, I am proud to say that I am a member of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)’s Professional Women in Building (PWB) Council. I have been involved with our local council through Metropolitan Builders and Contractors Association of NJ (Metro) since it’s inception over three years ago and have served as the Council Chair for the past two plus years. I find the group of women from a National to a Local level, to be some of the nicest, supportive, motivated and helpful women I have met. No matter what your vocation is, I feel it is important to belong to a group in your industry who is there to support you. I have found NAHB’s PWB to be that organization for me. In celebrating women this month, take a leap and get involved, you won’t regret it. What you put into it is what you get out of it. Let’s celebrate women in construction!
