The year is coming to an end, and it is time to reflect. Today was my last official day at the Institute for Hearing Technology and Acoustics (IHTA), RWTH Aachen University, and my PhD project is coming to an end. During my time at the institute, I had the pleasure of working on fantastic projects and with amazing people while exploring noise effects on young children's auditory cognition from a technical perspective. On this journey, I was part of Equal-Life, an EU-funded HORIZON2020 project that explores the exposome on the mental health of children. I want to especially highlight this project since I sincerely advocate the necessity of exploring the diversity of exposures to children in their early life and the corresponding effects. It has been a fascinating time to follow and contribute to this huge consortium of people striving towards a common goal in favor of children's health. I am really happy to be able to host a PhD and Postdoc networking event in Aachen at the end of my project time. Working together for around four years has tied people together, and it was great to see some of them again before leaving the project. Eventually, I think I got a good understanding of what the definition of the exposome within Equal-Life is (of course, it is a little bit different to what we are used to :)). When you start compiling a portfolio, it's always fun to stop and reflect a bit. Beyond those sexy final images, there are always crazy project stories and tough experiences you go through as a designer. With risk comes great reward however. Some of the best professional friendships I have built over the years were forged in the fires of long hours, uncertain outcomes and creative growth. In the end though, one positive comment from someone you've helped can make it all worth it. With that in mind, these projects stood out most to me.... Most inspiring :: The Philips Neonatal Care Futures program (codename Lotus) was easily the most focused, comprehensive, deep dive on a singular topic that I've ever experienced professionally. Our team was propelled by the excitement of creating a brand new, ground-up experience for one of the most vulnerable patient populations, critically ill neonates. We had the space, support and team to make magic happen (which we did), such a rarity. Toughest challenge :: Successfully building a fully custom, first-of-kind Surgical Futures simulation lab during a global pandemic that triggered a worker shortage, crazy inflation, corporate restructuring and snarled supply chains. Patience, persistence and ingenuity from the whole team made this one a reality. Just keep swimming, just keep swimming... Most rewarding :: Working with Dallas Children's Hospital to create an immersive environment for kids to decompress during stressful mental health situations. I have a bit of a soft spot for kids (as I am a bit of a big one myself), so this project will always be one of my favorites. How about you? Imagine a child struggling to keep up with their friends on a broken bicycle. Challenges within our visual system can hinder our ability to perform tasks, much like a bicycle's state affects a child's ability to use it. Our visual system is responsible for 70% of the sensory information received by our brain, influencing balance, memory, reading, learning, and even contributing to headaches & migraines.
