Today, I had the privilege of attending the 2024 STEM Career and Internship Fair at UC Santa Cruz. Engaging with recruiters and delving into discussions about potential job opportunities was an enriching experience. One proactive step I took prior to the event was applying for relevant positions in advance. By doing so, I ensured that recruiters had access to my resume and pertinent information, facilitating seamless conversations and maximizing the impact of our interactions. As I reflect on this experience, I recognize the importance of further proactive measures to enhance future career fair engagements. What other strategies do you recommend for maximizing the effectiveness of these events? Let's continue the discussion! #CareerFair #STEMOpportunities #ProactiveApproach

Attended the CS Career Fair yesterday and was able to talk to some awesome recruiters. I'd like to take the time to thank Georges Beyrouti for taking a look at my resume and referring me to Jesse Wolgamott, MBA for frontend at EOG. As a junior majoring in Computer Science, I'm not entirely too sure if my position as a student will permit a full-time position but I will continue to be on the lookout for internships and do my research in EOG! I appreciate your time in coming to our career fair and allowing me to grab a Rubix cube from your table as I missed the opportunity last semester to do so at the NSM + CS Career Fair. I had my eyes particularly set on LZ Technology, Inc. because of my great interest in Aerospace and Robotics. But it was just my luck that I had one particularly rough Database class last semester that dropped my GPA down 1 decimal below their required to apply. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't slacking off on applying to internships this semester, but this serves as a reminder that I need to step it up in everything I'm working on and not lose sight of my goals. I've been taking on a bunch of projects and extracurriculars this spring and even assumed the position of Student Director at UH's NSM Career Center. It's been difficult to assimilate to those added responsibilities on top of schoolwork, however, there is no doubt that I'm making progress. I definitely still need to do better in my classes but I won't be discouraged. Especially in this field, I fully understand now how internships are highly important but there was this one conversation I had with a classmate where she told me that inevitably and eventually we will have jobs regardless. Oftentimes, I tend to worry about the prospects of my career path and the future, though I feel that by holding onto that sentiment alone, I can have a more positive approach to figuring this stuff out and being kinder to myself. To anyone who's still applying to internships and/or job hunting, I hope you too are successful in your endeavors!

Meet Srividhya Pattabiraman (Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences, UMass Amherst MS ‘24) who has time and again used career fairs to network with employers to gain internship and full-time opportunities. She was a Data Science Intern at Eversource this past summer and is currently doing a co-op with them. She has worked on projects such as capturing power savings by implementing time series forecasting, as well as detecting defects in distribution lines using computer vision algorithms. Here are some of her insights about networking at career fairs: “Think of career fairs as a way to expand your network. Filter companies based on interest, research open opportunities, and tailor your approach. Leave a lasting impression on representatives by developing a pitch for each role and customizing your resume. If they are open to it, connect with them on LinkedIn. Last year, this approach resulted in a positive interaction with a senior manager from Eversource at a career fair. Despite no immediate openings, he reached out in April with an internship opportunity. After another networking event, an HR connection at AspenTech advocated for me with a hiring manager, securing an interview with the firm. Both my internship and full-time opportunities originated from my proactive engagement at career fairs. Seize the opportunity to make meaningful connections that may prove valuable for your career journey.” #careerspotlight #networking #careerfair #computerscience

Students: Are you ready to meet employers who want to hire computer science majors for internships and co-ops? Tennessee Tech’s engineering career fair is Feb. 8, and maybe you’re wondering, “How can a career fair help me?” For Nathanael Newton, a junior computer science major from Knoxville, Tech’s career fair was how he landed a one-year co-op with EOSYS Group in Nashville. As part of the digital transformation team, he built websites that connected operations technology data to the information technology network of client companies. He said the career fair helped him get the position by building his confidence: “Being able to go up and talk to people at the booths was a great confidence booster and helped me learn a lot about networking and making connections.” Watch the video to learn more. Who else has tips to share? - CS students: If you’ve participated in a co-op or internship, share your experience and tips! - Alumni, professors and industry leaders: What are some other ways a career fair can help students? #TNTech #StudentSuccess #EngineeringCareerFair #WhereComputerScientistsSoar Tennessee Technological University College of Engineering at Tennessee Technological University EOSYS Nathanael N.
