Enjoyed this piece by Jon Whiteaker in the The Drawdown. I agree that the term ESG has become problematic – and it would not surprise me if more firms in the Private Equity sector stop using it.
But much of the controversy around ESG inevitably misses the point: that it is fundamentally about managing risks and identifying opportunities.
‘Responsible investing’ was, at least initially, about mitigating ‘ESG’ risks – that is, looking at how a business’s negative impact on people or the planet could negatively affect its enterprise value.
Sustainable investing went one step further, by looking for opportunities to positively impact people or the planet in ways that could increase the value of the business.
Impact investing goes further still, by focusing on opportunities where businesses can actually help to solve environmental and social challenges.
Even if investors stop using the term ESG, they can’t afford to retreat from the process it represents – examining the impacts a business has (or can have) on people and the planet, in order to understand which represent potential risks to enterprise value, and which represent potential value creation opportunities.
