📣 Researching urban spaces? Contribute to our upcoming special issue on Spatial Capital, guest edited by Abhijeet Chandel, Babette Wyckaert, Caroline Newton, and Rachel Lee.
The concept of "spatial capital" seeks to expand Pierre Bourdieu's seminal work on social capital by incorporating the built environment as an active participant as well as an agent in shaping social structures, opportunities, and interactions. This special issue aims to deepen our understanding of how spatial environments contribute to creating or alleviating social disparities. It asks how operationalizing this knowledge might guide urban interventions towards spatial justice and sustainable futures. While we are interested in exploring various forms of spatial capital, including those that involve shared, negotiated, or contested ownership and control, we also seek to examine how these different forms of ownership shape the built environment and its impact on social structures, opportunities, and interactions.
We welcome submissions that:
▪️ Provide theoretical and empirical insights into space (rather than buildings or land) as a form of capital, exploring how urban populations navigate and shape their environments.
▪️ Discuss the concept of spatial capital within urban planning and design for equitable urban futures.
▪️ Analyse spatial capital as foundational for sustainable development, focusing on inclusivity and equitable access.
▪️ Examine the role of spatial capital in urban sustainability transitions, emphasising environmental, social, and economic resilience.
▪️ Investigate the impact of migration and globalisation on spatial capital, especially in transforming cities and villages.
Topics of Interest include, but are not limited to:
▪️ Theoretical explorations of spatial capital and its integration within urban and spatial planning.
▪️ Analyses of spatial justice and the right to the city in the context of spatial capital.
▪️ Investigations into the transformation of rural areas through the lens of spatial capital.
▪️ Multidisciplinary approaches to understanding and utilising spatial capital for creating inclusive urban spaces.
This special issue seeks to foster a rich and multidimensional exploration of spatial capital, contributing to contemporary discussions on urbanism and spatial justice.
The deadline for abstract submissions is 1st October 2024.
