Now, this is an interesting point about AI that's made in Rory Sutherland's opening keynote speech at the Nudgestock festival.

'If you went to uni and wrote a dissertation to get your degree, what did you do with that paper afterwards? Did you ever use it? Have you ever re-read it or referred to it since? Did you even bother keeping it? For most people the answer is no. The end product has no value after the degree is awarded. It's worthless. Meanwhile, the process of writing that paper is where the value lay. The journey was more important than the destination. It taught you research skills, writing skills, reading skills, communication skills. You processed information, mulled it over, criticised and synthesised the details. The value was in the effort, not the end product. However, the people creating AI systems seem to be obsessed with the idea of bypassing the very part of the journey that is valuable - as if saving time is the only factor that matters. But saving time at the expense of learning skills and personal satisfaction? Sometimes, the inefficiency is the important thing. Which would you rather do ... rush around TESCO and then get through the self-service checkouts and save a few minutes, or wander around a farmers' market where you get to compare and contrast produce, talk to the producers and vendors, take in the sights and smells? Some will prefer the super-efficient supermarket, some will prefer the slower dawdling shop. The point is that AI and many other algorithms assume that time is the only factor that matters. And it isn't. Perhaps what we need is slow AI - something that makes us ask questions we hadn't thought of - to aid our creativity - rather than doing the job for us or providing solutions that may be quick but not always satisfactory.'
