I've heard getting a degree described as a $100K+ (give or take 100K - haha) piece of paper with your name and a university on it. In reality, at the very least, it's a buffer between a time in your life when you probably weren't ready to be an adult. It gave you time, proved you had the discipline to fit in to a functioning community, and the drive to do what it takes to succeed and earn that degree. I used to think that the best thing that came from earning my degree was the ability to communicate well. I still believe that. But my thoughts on which side of communication I put emphasis on has changed. Therefore, I will now say that the best thing that came from earning my degree was my ability to listen. As you read this I'm sure you're already forming an opinion on what this post means to you... When in fact, it may not have been meant for you at all... The key to listening is understanding where the person is coming from, and what they are saying means to them. It's not always about you, in fact, when it comes to other people, it rarely is. The answer to your questions come from listening. Stop forming opinions while someone is talking, stop thinking about your response, stop thinking about yourself, and start listening. The answers are there, you just have to thoughtfully listen to hear it.

My college days are coming to an end. And I have noticed....... a stark REALITY. Basic communication and presentation skills are ignored unless it's placement season and you need to TALK the WALK! This observation isn't unique to my college alone. Many students dread speaking on the stage. Whether it's the fear of judgment, the pressure to perform, or simply feeling awkward, they avoid it whenever possible. I understand the nervousness and pressure but why hate it? After listening to them I realized - 1. Around 80% of them hadn't participated in extracurricular activities during their school years. 2. They never tried because it was not something extraordinary. 3. They thought it was too much work and no reward. 4. Being in the spotlight made them uneasy. And my childhood memories came back rushing. 1. My mother enrolled me in numerous public speaking competitions during my school days. 2. As a child I didn't care much about results but the whole process seemed fun as my mother spent time with me. 3. Whenever someone complimented my performance I was overjoyed!  These incidents have helped me in building my confidence as a teenager and in my adulthood I was spared from stage fright. And now I am convinced from my personal experience, that extracurricular activities shouldn't be ignored or undervalued. These activities serve as silent architects of our futures, shaping our personalities and capabilities. What do you think about it?

If graduate school is your next step and you don't know where to start. This post is probably for you! Firstly, identify schools that offer your program of interest, check their acceptance rates, check their requirements to see if you're a strong candidate. Arrange your documents (CV, transcripts, SOP,etc), follow application instructions (very important), submit, and pray. Truth is, there is a school for any profile in the world (There are over 24500 universities and colleges worldwide (don't hold me on this number, its an estimate, but you get the point I'm trying to make right?). Surely there will be one University for you, but you have to dig ).😉 Important, too, is recommendation letters. Notify your referees on time and encourage them to write quality letters that speak highly of your credibility for graduate studies. Build those relationships with your referees. You have to do most of the application yourself, sincerely. Graduate school itself comes with a lot of independence, so a few research on schools, application requirements etc should be pretty much straightforward. This is the number one skill every student needs to master. It’s every student’s dream to access all the opportunities they need and want. But we know it’s not always the case. In my experience, this one skill has proven very crucial time and time again. Self-advocacy. What does this mean? This means: → Speaking up: not being afraid to ask questions and share your journey. → And taking action: making things happen for you. All this to ensure your needs, goals, and interests are met. I started university as an unconventional student above the usual age and without a high school diploma. Because of this, I made a decision to set myself apart and not wait for opportunities to come to me. This has served me well. What a week! I've tracked every task and every milestone accomplished.  In the beginning of the week, I engaged in an intradepartmental interview for leadership roles within the CSI Club at college. I absolutely LOVE interviews. Crafting a proposal for future CSI club events was an exciting experience; I eagerly await the outcome - my fingers crossed! 🤞🏽 The same week, I contributed to editing my departmental newsletter - making it more comprehendible and implemented necessary formatting changes. Additionally, I got selected as an Editorial Committee Member for my college. Our team is immersed in our first task: shaping the college magazine. So far, being part of the Editorial Committee has been very exciting.  The past few days, I've been focused on addressing student enquiries via phone calls and text messages regarding Artwork Submissions for the college Magazine. As the SPOC for specific departments, I've extracted relevant data from the submissions and ensured alignment with necessary requirements. Interestingly, I created a tutorial video guiding students on how to “ENABLE ACCESS” while uploading the Artwork Softcopies into the Google Form, aiding those who were facing technical difficulties. To an outsider or anyone entrenched in a full time job, these achievements may seem minor. However, in my journey to raise awareness on Imposter Syndrome, I pledge to celebrate every form of progress, no matter how big or small. Progress is progress. How I organised my extracurriculars in the personal statement that got me into Oxford: -> Top universities all want you personal statement to be roughly 80% academic and 20% non academic (extracurriculars). -> Therefore the main body of your text must be academic, leaving your conclusion as the perfect place to put all those extracurriculars. -> To preserve the narrative structure of your main paragraphs your extracurriculars need to be together in the conclusion, not dropped in randomly to the main paragraphs. -> This also ends your personal statement off with personality, and the reader comes away with a strong sense of who you are and how you spend your time. Bonus tip: Use your extracurriculars as evidence for a positive quality you want to show the university you have, such as good time management skills.
