At what point does a house humidity make it an unsafe environment for inhabitants and workmen? Part of my career has been spent restoring not only gardens but historic houses too. Damp is a common issue and few builders understand the techniques needed, let alone the implications of doing it wrong. Estate houses are often converted from other uses, with no damp course, little insulation and no airflow, their design never intended to humans to live in. #building #housing #restoration #architecture

Contextual Inversion On Monday 10th June 2024 Chichester District Council granted planning permission for our 32nd #paragraph84 isolated house in the countryside. The plan of this house and its contained courtyards was generated following our initial landscape & visual assessment where we identified various strategic viewpoints of the site from within the South Downs National Park. From these viewpoints we identified a view "shadow", a portion of the site which remained concealed from these views. Our wider analysis also recognised a prevailing characteristic of farmsteads being enclosed by perimeter walls or fences and generally receding on the eye into their treelined backdrop. We worked within this view shadow and developed a building which contained its recreational landscape within controlled courtyards within which the landscaping and architectural expression could extend the fluid organic characteristics of the flint nodule whilst the exterior of the form presented as an expression of the darker colours & textures found on the inside of a flint nodule. This project is a great example of the importance of undertaking lots of detailed analysis of the defining character of the place before putting pen to paper on developing a solution. The solution ought to always become an elegant resolution of the unique cocktails of ingredients presented by the site and the client. #granddesigns #architecture #planning #sdnp

As architects and property developers continually reimagine our commercial spaces, the role of landscaping in enhancing aesthetics and functionality has never been more significant. A key component of this landscape evolution is the strategic use of retaining walls. Retaining walls are more than just aesthetic features; they are integral to addressing the practical challenges of soil erosion and water drainage, especially in areas with uneven topography. These walls not only secure the soil but also create multi-level landscaping opportunities that can be leveraged for additional green spaces, gardens, or outdoor seating areas, adding immeasurable value to any commercial property. Beyond the functional, these walls offer an opportunity for creative expression in design – from the choice of materials to the integration of plant life. The fusion of strength and style they provide can elevate the simplest of spaces to an ecological artwork. If you're looking at developing a commercial space that resonates with both beauty and purpose, consider how retaining walls could play into your landscape architecture. Let’s discuss innovative ways to incorporate these structures into your next project. #Landscaping #CommercialDesign #RetainingWalls

Landscape Architecture and the Promenade: A promenade is a leisurely place to walk or ride, especially in a public space for pleasure or display. It is a French term derived from the mid-16th century, referring to the actions of people of the court leisurely strolling as if on display. In the context of landscape architecture, a promenade is essentially a vegetated path within a landscape design, providing a highly sensorial experience and often mediating between large and human scales. Promenades have evolved from city public spaces, such as streets and parks, to shopping malls and virtual public spaces. They can also be found along seafronts and riverbanks, as seen in the innovative and sustainable development efforts in places like Hong Kong. Overall, promenades in landscape architecture provide not only a functional pathway but also a space for leisurely strolling, people watching, and enjoying the surrounding environment. Conservation rooflights, also known as heritage rooflights, have been a crucial part of ##architecturaldesign for centuries. They are an essential element of many #historicbuildings, and their evolution over time reflects the changing needs and priorities of #architects, #builders, and building owners. The history of #conservationrooflights can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when they were commonly used in churches and other religious buildings. At this time, they were typically small, narrow, and set high in the roof, designed primarily to allow #naturallight to enter the building while minimizing the loss of heat. They were often made of small panes of glass set in lead cames, and their design and placement were determined by the structural requirements of the building. Curb appeal is often a second thought to the kitchen & bathroom remodel but should not be put off for long. When one needs to sell a house is not the time to have just started to think about curb appeal. Once you have purchased a home improve its curb appeal! Whether or not it’s your dream home or a flipper. When trying to sell a house the last thing you want to be doing is asking yourself if your house has any curb appeal. It means real dollars and if you purchased your house at the right price people will want to get out of their cars and see your dream. #realestateadvice #landscapedesign #homebuyingtips
Curb appeal is the positive impact that a home can have when you first notice somebody’s house! Does your home have the level of curb appeal that you would like it to have. Some people want a dramatic statement, some prefer something subtle and charming, some want a level of mystique or privacy, or even something very low key! Landscaping and hardscapes can play a big role in achieving the desired curb appeal , definition of spaces, and enhancement of the architecture. Harsh lines can be softened, special features enhanced, entrances more inviting, and statements can be made! Consider sitting down with a creative Landscape Architect to make your home reflect who you are and how inviting it should appear.
