🚨 Faith in Public Life: A Force for Good or an Obstacle to Progress? 🚨 As part of the ongoing debate on faith’s role in society, The Lunar Society is hosting a timely event today, exploring the question: Faith in Public Life – A Force for Good or an Obstacle to Progress? In an era marked by polarising views on religion and its place in the public sphere, where in different parts of the world religion and faith is being weaponised to achieve political ends and even in light of recent developments in the news here in the UK, the conversation around faith’s role in public life has taken on new urgency. Today, the Archbishop of Canterbury has called the idea of assisted dying "dangerous" and warned of a "slippery slope" that could lead to more people feeling pressured to end their lives medically. This intervention has brought the ethical and moral dimensions of this debate into sharp focus, reigniting discussion about how faith shapes public policy. From discussions on faith schools to the role of religion in shaping policies on social issues like reproductive rights, assisted dying, same-sex marriage, and religious freedom in workplaces, the conversation is ever-evolving. Yet, what should anchor this debate? Recently, I reflected with two organisations on the NOLAN Principles as the guiding values for integrity in their ways of working and how their leadership navigates their roles in public life. These principles remind us that whether motivated by faith or not, public figures and institutions must commit to: 💥 Openness 💥 Objectivity 💥 Honesty 💥 Leadership 💥 Integrity 💥 Selflessness 💥 Accountability I'm looking forward to hearing about whether faith is upholding or hindering the path to a just, equitable, and progressive society. The Atlas of Variant Effects Alliance is an international collaborative effort with a mission to propel systematic measurements of variant impact on functional elements of human and pathogen genomes, towards diagnosing and treating human disease and understanding genes, gene products and their regulation. Their vision is to create comprehensive variant effect maps for important regions of human and human pathogen #genomes that could ultimately assist in the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of disease by bringing together data generators, curators and consumers, along with funders and other stakeholders, to set standards, share tools and develop strategy. https://lnkd.in/eRG3kvBS
