As I gear up for my upcoming summer internship, I've got a whole mix of emotions swirling around. You know, the kind that makes your stomach do somersaults one minute and has you grinning from ear to ear the next. So, here's the thing—I'm pumped for this opportunity, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a tad nervous too. I mean, who wouldn't be, right? The idea of potentially snagging a PPO (Pre-Placement Offer) is like having a golden ticket, but it also adds a bit of pressure to perform. But hey, I'm choosing to focus on the ride rather than the destination. Sure, landing a PPO would be incredible, but what really matters is the journey—the people I'll meet, the skills I'll learn, and the memories I'll make along the way. Picture this: me, walking into the office on the first day, feeling a mix of excitement and jitters, not quite sure what to expect but ready to dive in headfirst. I can't wait to tackle new challenges, learn from experienced mentors, and maybe even stumble a few times along the road to success. note to self: make sure you get what you need out of an internship 👏🏾 If you’re a CS student of color, hear me out. This might sound obvious, but you’d be surprised. Companies leverage interns for cheap labor, fresh talent, and diversity. During an internship, I maximize the experience in 3 ways: 1️⃣ In conversations, I mention being an intern. People like talking to interns. 2️⃣ I sought out people with roles or skills I wanted in order to normalize these aspirations. 3️⃣ I curated a list of skills and experiences I wanted to have during the internship. The recent layoffs highlight that companies don’t play when it comes to their bottom line. While companies and interns are mutually beneficial to one another, my own growth needs to be one of my priorities. Do you agree or disagree? I could've started a Consulting/TedX Club in college. - But, I chickened out. I could've applied to big-name firms for summer internships. - self-rejected thinking they only wanted SRCC students. I could've committed to one society instead of spreading myself across 5. - Didn't feel good enough to cut just one. I could've made an effort to make friends during college. - blamed the lockdown. Yeah, I could've done all that stuff, but I didn't. WHY? I bailed without even giving it a shot. I'm not the one to preach consistency or boast about major achievements. Because, let's face it, I don't have any. But I did learn a thing or two. "Trust in yourself." Right now - No one's started a Consulting/TedX Club yet. (if you're from ARSD, step up!) My classmates got those summer internships. The difference between them and me? They APPLIED, at least. I dropped out of all those societies because I couldn't manage. I could've had some epic memories sticking with just one. I've got 0 friends from college (except for Parleen Ranhotra , of course). So, if you're not sure what move to make, TAKE THAT LEAP. Worst case - you get a rejection. Best case - you're not the one sharing this story. P.S. - Ever look back and think, "Man, I should've just gone for it"?
