The new geothermal industry is the result of a surprising confluence of interests among the oil-and-gas, technology and green power industries. The heat that the drillers find underground can be used to generate a steady, round-the-clock supply of carbon-free electricity, which is coveted by tech companies for their power-hungry data centers. 

This is an example of the type of promising research that the Dept of Energy funded under the previous administration to better understand how to improve recovery of gas from shales. It was headed by Los Alamos national lab. There are analogous papers in the literature on shale oil. I consider it important for DOE to continue to fund and mature such R and D, which to my knowledge has not happened over the past few years. Aterian plc (LSE: ATN), a critical metal-focused exploration and development company, is advancing its joint venture with Rio Tinto in Southern Rwanda, reporting significant progress in their exploration efforts. Recent activities include the receipt of 2,274 auger soil samples which have enhanced the geological model and identified key pathfinder elements pointing to sub-surface pegmatite occurrences likely containing lithium. With the geological groundwork and drill planning complete, Aterian anticipates starting the drilling next month to explore the potential lithium-bearing mineralization, aiming to contribute to the global supply of critical battery metals. EnergyPathways plc (AIM: EPP) has submitted a gas storage license application to the North Sea Transition Authority for its MESH (Marram Energy Storage Hub) project, covering the offshore Marram Gas Field in the UK Irish Sea. The MESH development aims to provide a stable supply of natural gas and green hydrogen, enhancing UK energy security for at least 20 years and addressing commodity price volatility. The project, expected to store about 50 billion cubic feet of gas, will be powered by renewable wind energy, significantly reducing GHG emissions compared to imported LNG. MESH also plans to convert excess wind power into green hydrogen, potentially saving UK consumers significant costs related to wind curtailments. A nice summary of the breakthroughs in drilling technology to access geothermal energy at a fraction of conventional drilling costs.

Georgina Energy PLC (LSE:GEX) has announced an upgraded resource estimate for the Hussar helium and hydrogen project, in Western Australia’s Officer Basin. Hussar’s unrisked prospective recoverable resources increase by around 20% with the new estimate comprising 185 billion cubic feet of helium and 205 billion cubic feet of hydrogen, whilst the hydrocarbon gas potential is estimated at 1.9 trillion cubic feet. The upgraded estimates are based on new seismic data and mapping, which Georgina said confirms the presence of a substantial pre-salt structure covering 300 square kilometres in the Townsend Formation. Today’s new estimate comes ahead of Georgina’s plans to re-enter the Hussar 1 Well in November. The drill programme will extend the well to a target depth of 3,200 metres to reach Townsend.
