In Europe, alcohol consumption has been steadily falling since the mid-2000s. Figures from World Health Organization shows that between 2010 and 2020, alcohol consumption in Europe declined by 0.5 litres per capita. "When it comes to our physical health and mental health, we are much more aware of looking after this. Often, alcohol consumption is an easy win to change." #healthandwellness #alcohol #healthychoices #wellness

My most UNPOPULAR health take: giving up alcohol is one of the most productive things you can do for your physical, mental, and emotional health. People don't want to hear it because they've been consuming it for so long, but it's a crutch for stress, a regular part of social gatherings, and a huge source of peer pressure. But alcohol destroys your liver, which is responsible for regulating hormones and endocrine processes. Think about this for a second. You're stuck at a weight you have been at for YEARS. No amount of strength training or dieting is moving you in the right direction, but you refuse to give up alcohol. The same could be said for emotional/stress regulation. Your body is constantly in fight-or-flight mode; you feel panicked and on edge, but you feel like your glass of wine (or two) per night is the thing quelling that feeling. There's a pattern here, and I wouldn't be willing to die on this hill if I didn't have clients who have given up or reduced alcohol intake and seen massive changes. One of them was drinking 2-3 drinks PER night PER WEEK(!) since moving to Tennessee, because she thought that was normal. "That's what my friends and I always did, and the American Heart Association's guidelines even say 4-6 drinks per week is okay for women." America has health all f*cked up if it's permitting alcohol at that rate. The undoing of alcohol from our collective consciousness and routines has to be a priority for the next decade if we want to extend our healthspans. https://lnkd.in/eayweW7S

Quranic verses that discourage alcohol include: Chapter 2 verse 219: "They ask you about wine (khamr) and gambling. Say, 'In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.'" #health #soberlife #quranquotes #reasonable https://lnkd.in/dM4Sfzpc

Some people who drink may say, "I drink every day, but not excessively," or "I don't drink often, just on weekends, but when I do, I really drink a lot." The second statement is considered binge drinking. To clarify, for women, binge drinking is having 4 or more drinks on a single occasion within 2 to 3 hours, while for men, it's 5 or more drinks on one occasion. But how does a peg-a-day fare compare to several pegs over weekends regarding its overall health impact? It’s important to note that alcohol is not good for your body, and there is no safe limit at all. Even the ones who talked about a safe drinking limit threw in a disclaimer, saying there's no solid proof that alcohol can be consumed safely. A recent report from the World Health Organisation (#WHO) in The Lancet Public Health journal states that there is no completely safe level of alcohol consumption, and even small amounts may have negative effects on health. Rahul Luther, addiction therapist at HOPE TRUST™️ (Est. 2002) explains that the idea of "safe drinking" itself is flawed. He cited cases where even a single drink led to pancreatitis. “What a lot of people tend to miss is that alcohol doesn't just affect the liver but also impacts the pancreas.” He adds that while some health professionals suggest moderate alcohol consumption for generally healthy individuals (under 90 ml per week), this advice may not apply to everyone. People with existing conditions like diabetes and hypertension are strongly advised to avoid alcohol. In essence, while moderate drinking may be suitable for some, those with specific health issues should stay away from alcohol. 😎 “But I only drink beer...” Doctors frequently encounter patients who say that they drink only beer and do not consider beer to be alcohol. “It is important to note that beer consumption is as good as consuming any other type of alcohol. The types of alcohol, such as beer, whisky, rum, gin, etc., fall into the same category as alcoholic drinks. It is the percentage weight per volume of alcohol that is important. Alcohol, in whatever form, has the same effect on the body. It can impair decision-making and cognitive functioning. Another important factor is the denial of the person who has a drinking problem. It delays diagnosis. Patients have excuses and explanations for the amount of alcohol they are consuming as well as their frequency. In short, the extent of alcohol consumption that results in liver damage and harm to other organs varies from individual to individual. It's important to recognise that some people may experience damage even with lower levels of alcohol intake. Therefore, comparing one's own tolerance or health to others and imitating or citing their drinking habits is not advisable. I help business owners and executives ✴️ get stronger, fitter, and feel great in their bodies ✴️ regain control of their health ✴️ DM me for a nutrition and fitness discovery call.
I stopped drinking alcohol about ten years ago. No - I was not an alcoholic. I’ve never had a “drinking problem.” The reason I stopped was that alcohol wasn't worth it anymore. I’m sure many of you will identify - how, during your twenties, you could have four to five drinks a night, get up in the morning, and be ready for any physical or mental demand the day presented. And then, somewhere in your thirties or even early forties, the body started sending a message you may not have expected. The post-drinking symptoms took longer to pass. The body felt more achy, and working out the following day became a struggle. The mind felt sluggish and foggy for longer; even a double espresso would do the trick. So what happened? The price for the momentary pleasure that came with drinking alcohol gradually increased over the years. I have been training much more regularly and intensely in the past ten years. It became clear that I couldn’t maintain this routine even with one or two glasses of wine with dinner. The problem for many is that habits tend to linger much longer after realizing the harm they cause. Habits die hard, they say. It’s the struggle period of resisting a truth we don’t want to face. We tend to rationalize keeping the habit. In the case of alcohol, it’s not that hard since there were studies that claimed that a moderate consumption of alcohol is good for the health. What better way of justifying your drinking than a science to back it up, right? These claims were debunked a long time ago. The truth is that health-wise, alcohol is not benefiting us in any amount. My decision to stop drinking was not a conscious decision. The habit just faded away. I remember how my wife and I noticed one day that we still had the same bottle of white wine in the fridge for a week and a month. We just didn’t feel like it anymore. I remember ‘remembering’ how I used to enjoy drinking, wondering where that feeling went. Your experience with alcohol may be completely different, and my intention is not to judge or to preach to anyone. My intention is to create awareness of something that may have been brewing in your mind, maybe even for a while now, and you pushed it aside, not wanting to face it. If this resonates in any way - please let me know in the comments.
