Communications Manager | PR, Brand & Corporate Communications

Over the past few weeks, I've connected with three recent grads from my alma mater to discuss my experience in PR and communications. Here’s some advice I shared:   1. Agency work is invaluable. ✍️ Despite the bad rap agencies sometimes get, it's been insanely impactful in my career, and many of my colleagues would agree. I got to flex my creative writing skills, learned to be nimble and agile during brainstorming sessions, and worked with a variety of clients to discover the sector(s) I enjoy most.   2. Build relationships. 🤝 Attend industry events, connect with people on LinkedIn, and reach out to those you admire for informational interviews. While it's possible to be an introvert and succeed in communications, networking and putting yourself out there is crucial. (Pro Tip: Bring extroverted friends or colleagues to events to help you loosen up!)   3. Keep all your best writing samples in a secure folder. 📁 Employers will ask for it. That's it, that's all.   4. Find joy in the "busy work." 🧩 Early in your career, you may pull monitoring reports and build media lists, and it may be hard to see the bigger impact, but this work is the foundation of big campaigns. Once you master these tasks, you'll move on to more complex skills like client management and strategizing.   Working in PR and comms is like painting on a moving canvas but the saying that ’90 percent of life is showing up’ is FACTS in this field.   #communications #publicrelations #commsadvice

This list is excellent! I started my career at an agency and the skills I learned there were so valuable as I transitioned to the corporate world. I also joined IABC right out of college and got involved as a volunteer and board member. I can trace almost every single job and client I’ve ever had back to a connection I’ve made through IABC.

Love this advice, Kamara! In fact, you will still use your foundational agency skills (sans faxing) if you go in-house and do it all as a one-person PR team, so get those skills early and often! :)

When I first started in PR as an intern, I actually found myself enjoying the "busy work" that was assigned to me. I loved the challenge of building media lists and putting together a spreadsheet with our clients' contact info. No matter what it was, I always tackled it with enthusiasm and attention to detail. I felt proud whenever I turned over my work to my colleagues knowing that it was critical to building the foundation of the big campaigns. Looking forward to bringing it forward to the next stage of my career!
