The Coalition for Supportive Care of Kidney Patients brings together like-minded people who care deeply about the quality of compassionate, supportive care for kidney patients.
What is Kidney Supportive Care? We will spend the next few weeks unpacking these terms and what Kidney Supportive Care means for patients, their families, and clinicians. Let's first review this Executive Summary published in Kidney International Jan 2024, authored by many palliative nephrology specialists across the globe. The authors define Kidney Supportive Care as " An approach that aims to improve the quality of life for people for whom kidney disease, either directly or indirectly, substantially impacts their well-being, treatment options, or access to care, and their families, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial, and spiritual." "The definition for KSC is anchored in the World Health Organization definition of palliative care and was endorsed by the KDIGO Controversies Conference on KSC in 2013, the ISN-sponsored symposium on integrated kidney care in 2018, and this ISN CKM international working group. People with endometriosis endure long term, painful symptoms, so why is there a 6.5 year delay between the start of symptoms and a diagnosis? While awareness around the disease is growing, this long wait for diagnosis highlights what is known as the gender pain gap; the fact that pain in women is not as well understood and more mistreated compared to pain in men due to systemic gaps and biases, such as medical misogyny. Medical misogyny is the social prejudice, medical ignorance, and research exclusion that women and girls experience. Medical misogyny, alongside other reasons contribute to the diagnosis delay because: - Medical misogyny dismisses women and gender diverse people’s pain - Men’s bodies were historically seen as the standard, so all medical training focused on men and was only later applied to women - Clinical factors such as nonspecific symptoms and lack of accurate diagnostic tools The good news is that women’s health issues are getting more attention, and health clinics dedicated to endometriosis and pelvic pain are operating across Victoria. Loddon Mallee women are eligible for a GP referral to the newly opened Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Centre at Bendigo Community Health.
