Does it matter if your copy-editor has expertise in the same subject matter as your book? It can. A copy-editor who is also a subject matter expert (SME) already has depth of knowledge in the topic included in your book. This means that they are more likely to catch any errors that a non-SME might miss (because they otherwise seem probable), and they can help refine those aspects of your text to make it the best it can be. Bonus: the editing process will likely be faster because there will be less research required. Whether it is the entire manuscript or just a portion of it, a copy-editor with subject matter expertise can help make your story ring true for your readers. If your writing project involves horses, art, or art history (fiction or non-fiction), then I'm your copy-editor SME! I also edit cozy mystery and romance genres. Drop me a line and let's chat.

The journey of turning an idea into a literary work of art can feel like a rollercoaster—there are highs, lows, and a lot of dizzying loops in between! You sit down with a cup of coffee (or three), ready to pour your thoughts into words, but by the end of the day, sometimes you’ve only managed a half-decent opening sentence and a very odd Google search history. But here’s the thing: the beauty of the written word is that it has the power to transform. A single sentence, perfectly placed, can evoke emotion, change perspectives, and create worlds. That’s why every manuscript is more than just a rough draft—it’s a masterpiece in the making. The Magic of Manuscript Writing You might be thinking, "But my draft is a mess!" Don't worry. Every great book started out as a scribbled mess. Even Shakespeare probably had days when he stared at his quill and thought, "What am I doing?" The process of refining your manuscript is like sculpting a marble statue: each revision chips away at the rough edges to reveal the masterpiece beneath. It’s a bit of elbow grease, a lot of patience, and maybe some chocolate to get through the tough parts. But it’s worth it. From Draft to Polished Gem Editing and revising isn’t just about fixing typos (though we do love a good typo hunt). It’s about fine-tuning your voice, tightening up the narrative, and making sure your message shines through clearly. Here’s where the fun part begins—yes, fun! Imagine having a conversation with your future readers, guiding them through your story with every word. That’s the essence of good editing. Celebrating the Written Word Why do we write? Because words matter. They connect us, teach us, and leave a legacy long after we’re gone. Your manuscript, whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, or poetry, holds the power to influence and inspire. So, give yourself a little celebration as you work. Each word you write brings you closer to your masterpiece. And if all else fails, remember: even Hemingway had to start somewhere! Keep going, one word at a time. #Publishing #AuthorToReader #BookCreation #Author #Selfpublishedauthor #Selfpublished #Writeabook #Editing

Comforting words in a way; even the renowned Hemingway had his struggles with writing, and he went on to publish 7 novels, 6 short story collections, and 2 non-fiction works. So, if you’ve ever found yourself staring at a blank screen with the cursor flashing at you not having the faintest idea how to start, take the pressure off of yourself and find peace in the knowledge that your first draft will likely be shit, but as long as there are words on the page you’ve at least started the journey towards improvement! (P.S. I edited this post about 5 times) #ernesthemingway #beenthere #firstdrafts

If I could give you one piece of advice on writing a book, it would be this: Don’t be afraid to write a shitty first draft. ✏ First drafts are rarely structurally sound. First drafts are written without making revisions. First drafts are a starting point. And? First drafts are one step closer to FINISHED MANUSCRIPTS. 🤓 🙌
