Institute of Planetary Survival for Sustainable Well-being (PLANETIIUM) is formerly known as IIUM Molecular and Cellular Biology Research Cluster (iMoleC) which was established in 2013. The research cluster comprised culture technology, reproductive biology, microbiology, biochemical analyses, animal study, and bioinformatics, and it managed to engage various experts at IIUM by having collaborative research and offering consultations and laboratory services. The advent of COVID-19 has taught us that health issues cannot be solved in silos but it requires the integration of multi-disciplinary knowledge to provide holistic sustainable health solutions. Therefore, in 2022 the cluster evolved into an institute that focuses on collaborative, multidisciplinary/transdisciplinary research activities which cover molecular to global approaches to enhance impactful outcomes to benefit the community and industry. PLANETIIUM aims to form the core backbone technology to provide solutions to planetary health and survival.

Single-cell Spatial data analysis is not the same as Single-cell RNA-Sequencing analysis. With spatial genomics, we can analyze cell-cell interactions across a tissue, but this requires a new way of thinking. By nature, similar cell types will cluster together, so how can we distinguish those inherent spatial correlations from new, interesting biology? There is an emerging class of analysis algorithms to help answer these questions and NanoString's recent effort was just published. Developing advanced 3D cell culture requires collaboration, not isolation. There's much to do before full adoption by the scientific community and industry. From model development to data storage, many elements must align. The key? Transparency. Open dialogue and information exchange among researchers are crucial. This encourages the sharing of protocols and methodologies, strengthening the field. At Wellcome Sanger Institute, we prioritise this. In collaboration with Wellcome Connecting Science Learning and Training, we’ve also developed an advanced organoid course for experienced researchers interested in 3D cell culture. We aim to facilitate learning, sharing, and expanding knowledge within the scientific community. We need to paddle in the same direction to progress.
