You do not need to use a recruiter in your job search, but here are a few reasons why we may be helpful. ✔ Market insights - We know the trends, we live the ups and downs. Curious how the layoffs will impact hiring in Q3? We can make a pretty educated guess (anyone that claims otherwise is selling a course). ✔ Company insight - Fun fact, not all clients are awesome. Less fun fact, none of them will tell you so. While no good recruiter will throw their client under the bus, they can provide you tools to navigate/avoid potential bad apples. ✔ Salary insight - Not just what that specific role pays, but what YOU, at this stage in your career, with x and y certifications/training should be targeting. ✔ Resume insight - Working 1:1 with hiring managers gives us a ton of info on what they are looking for, beyond the job description. Today, let's talk about resumes. With all the recent layoffs, it's important to have a strong resume that highlights your professional journey. Remember, a resume is your personal narrative. Here are some tips that have worked for me in the past: ✅️ Top Center- Start with your name, city, state, zip, LinkedIn URL, phone number, professional email, and whether you're authorized to work in the US and willing to relocate. ✅️ Instead of a "Professional Summary" section, try listing the title of the role you're applying for. Create a 2-3 sentence elevator pitch of what sets you apart from other candidates. ✅️ Next, add a "Skills" or "Education" section. For skills, keep it relevant to the role you're applying for. Research top desired skills and add 6-9 of them. For education, list your highest degree to lowest and omit grad years to prevent ageism. If you're still working on a degree, list your expected grad date. Then, add any relevant certifications or licenses with license numbers. ✅️ In the "Experience" section, list your positions in reverse chronological order. Use bullet points to describe your accomplishments, not just your job responsibilities. Include quantifiable data such as budgets managed or processes improved. Avoid company-specific jargon and instead use widely used industry terms. If you're pivoting careers, highlight relevant experience such as customer service, communication, multitasking, creative marketing, and stakeholder communication. If you have multiple short tenure roles, explain why. If you have large employment gaps, add a bullet explaining what you were doing during that time. Remember, your resume is your narrative and you're in control of what the reader sees. Don't lie, but rough estimates are fine if you no longer have access to information due to job loss. Resumes are stupid and I hate them. Perfecting your resume is a complete waste of time. (Part 1/2) I say this as a hiring manager who talks to other hiring managers all the time, all of whom (privately) agree, with zero exceptions. Here’s why: 1. You’re not a credible witness about yourself, especially anything positive. Of course *you’re* going to say you did all this great stuff, only a fool wouldn’t. You don’t even really have a choice about it because you’ll never get the job otherwise. 2. With very few exceptions, every bit of truth in them is “massaged” in obvious, boring, banal ways that make me want to roll my eyes out of my head (see point #1). 3. You know who struggles the most with resumes? Engineers and technical folks who never had any interest or experience in writing, speaking, or selling. You know who doesn’t struggle at all with resumes? Slick, polished liars with lots of experience writing, speaking, and selling (see point #1). 4. They don’t distinguish you in any way. The worst employee the hiring manager ever hired had a resume about as good - or maybe better! - than the best employee they ever hired, otherwise they wouldn’t have made it to the final interview (see points #1, 2, and 3). 5. NOBODY makes hiring decisions based on resumes. Your posts on social media make a wayyyyy bigger difference, because they actually demonstrate your thinking, attitude, and decision-making, and in a social context. Very useful preview of things to come for a hiring manager. 6. They’re entirely redundant. A legacy of a bygone era. We all have LinkedIn profiles now. Nobody likes reading resumes; everyone likes surfing social media. Working on your profile and making engaging, thoughtful posts makes way more sense. It breaks my heart to see so many people who have been affected by layoffs still struggling to find a job, or even land an interview. The high amount of layoffs in such a short period of time resulted in a crazy amount of job seekers all applying to the same jobs. Seeing positions that have been posted for only an hour or two have hundreds, even thousands of applicants is pretty surreal. In light of this, I’ve been trying to come up with ways that I could help. I’m always happy to provide a reference, share job postings that I think would be a good fit, and connect people to anyone in my network I know is hiring. But it doesn’t feel like enough, given the circumstances. And then it suddenly dawned on me earlier this week as I was helping yet another candidate I’m working with completely reformat their resume, that this... This. Is. It. I’ve interviewed many people who have amazing skillsets, experience, training/certifications, etc. whose resumes are…well…not great, to put it mildly. It happens a LOT. And if my applicant’s resumes were screened by the ATS rather than me taking the time to review them all myself, it would be very unlikely that they’d make it past any ATS to even get in front of my, or any recruiters eyes. All of that to say (and if you’ve made it this far, thank you for sticking with me here 🙃), I would love to help a few people by doing a resume review, making modifications, or even fully re-writing it myself at absolutely no cost. So many ghost jobs, layoffs, bad offers, overwhelmed hiring teams. 📧 Try this template for a last message to try & get a response: Hi [their name], I hope this email finds you well! I know this hiring decision is taking longer than probably both of us anticipated, but since I haven’t heard back from you, I’ll assume this position is no longer available. If that’s not the case, do you know when I can expect to hear an update about the hiring decision? I’m still very interested in the role! I saw this thread on Blind re/ #layoffs and #unemployed segments outside of tech. My personal experience applying for jobs these past 2 months? No recruiter is “ghosting” me 🤷🏼♀️ Of the jobs I applied to, MOST of them I never have a chance to interview for 🚫 There are MANY reasons for this: skill match, experience, competition (internal and external), budgets, hiring freezes, and TIMING. And the interviews I’ve been able to land? They’ve primarily been through ✨ NETWORKING ✨with engaged recruiters who I build social or personal relationships with. My takeaways? 1) Use your voice and put yourself out there. Market your strengths and values 🙏🏼 doing this gets you noticed and allows the path to become clearer for both parties. 2) As for those #recruiters #ghosting you?? 👻 They’re not. They’re doing their very best with the hand they’ve been dealt. These are unprecedented times for them, too ❤️ so please lead with kindness (& thank a recruiter friend because my goodness they deserve some appreciation). #networking #opentowork #interviewing
