I grew up poor and had to hustle for anything I wanted. I started creating my own jobs when I was 10 and worked 2-3 jobs throughout college. Each job taught me about different sides of humanity, myself, how to get good at new things fast and enjoy the ride. Even the lowest paid job I look back at fondly as it gave me so much more than just income. It also shaped my brain and life decisions in unexpected ways. It’s also made me feel very fortunate to have found things post college that I love doing and getting up every morning to tackle, especially when the going gets tough. A few of the most unusual jobs I did: *carnival game entrepreneur *car washer/waxer *ferry deckhand *concert security *gym front desk *preschool/afterschool teacher *pharmacy technician *grocery store manager *X Games ops *tech event photographer I love hearing about people’s nonlinear work adventures, share yours in the comments! What was the most unusual thing you have been paid for (even for one day)? What was the most surprising or valuable lesson you got from a job?

I help companies navigate the overwhelming time commitment necessary to hire the best people so you can concentrate on you regular job and have peace of mind making the final hiring decision.
Would you put a bag of dog poop at the curb of your own home……and what does that have to do with recruiting top performers? Walking in my neighborhood last week I came across this sign in front of a neighbor’s home. My neighbor went dumpster diving to retrieve a bag of dog poop from their own trash can. They then placed it on their own sidewalk with a sign, aiming to shame the culprit who left it in their trash can. Sure, it's frustrating when someone uses your trash can for their dog's waste. But is dumpster diving and public shaming really the smart move? Especially when you put it on the curb of your own home? My father always says you may be right but are you sure you’re wise? Now, let’s talk hiring. I had a client who offered a candidate a job with a verbally agreed unusual term. Legal investigated, found it unconventional, and changed the official offer without telling anyone before sending the official offer letter. The candidate was surprised and pushed back, leading to two weeks of negotiations. Despite eventually reverting to the original term in the formal offer letter, the candidate declined. Was the company right to investigate? Probably. Was it wise to change the offer after a verbal agreement? Absolutely not. Just like the homeowner was right to be upset, but unwise to handle it by public shaming….and cluttering their own yard in the process This job market is tricky. It's more of an employer's market, but that doesn't mean you can treat candidates poorly. Your reputation is on the line. Every decision, every negotiation, every offer matters. Be wise. Be respectful. And win the right talent.

A man saw a boy on the beach throwing starfish back into the ocean. When the man asked why, the boy explained that if he didn’t, they would die. The man pointed out the futility of the effort given the vast number of starfish and the miles of beach. The boy responded by throwing another starfish into the sea, saying, "I made a difference to that one." Inspired, the man joined in, and soon others did too. By the end of the day, dozens of people were throwing starfish back into the ocean. This story shows that every small action matters. Each effort can create a positive impact, and collective actions can lead to significant change. Let's keep making a difference, one step at a time, and inspire others to do the same.
