As we age, we may experience changes in mobility and flexibility. For Healthy Aging Month, we want to promote the benefits of walking to help delay or decrease the effects of aging on the body. Individuals who walk may have a lower risk for dementia than those who took fewer steps. Remind your loved ones or client about the benefits of walking: • Helps maintain strong bones • Helps with weight management • Improves mood • Helps Individuals remain independent as long as possible • Promotes rest and sleep • Prevents Constipation • Improves appetite For caretakers working with seniors who need to walk, it is very important to make sure Individuals get enough walking throughout the day to improve quality of life and promote Independence. If the Individual does not keep walking, soon they may lose the ability to walk and even transfer independently. Keep these tips in mind: • Walk the individual as tolerated. • Every little bit of walking helps, even if it is just 5 mins a few times the shift. #HealthyAging #SupportingIndependence
