This story of advertising legend, David Olgivy, is fascinating. On a warm spring day, Ogilvy was on his normal walk into the office, when he came upon a blind homeless man who was begging. The man had a sign which read: “I am blind, please help.” However, the man’s donation cup was empty. Ogilvy paused and was about to put some money in the man’s cup, but then grabbed the man’s sign instead, and with a few quick pen strokes he rewrote it. When Ogilvy left the office later that day, the man’s cup was overflowing with money. So what did Ogilvy write on the sign? Instead of just stating facts (I am blind) and making a request (please help), the sign now told a story. It conveyed emotion. And it triggered empathy. The homeless man’s sign now read: “It is spring, and I am blind.” Those passing by thought of their own springtime memories. The beauty of the changing seasons and all the other sights and sounds… And they thought of how this poor man wasn’t able to enjoy or experience it in the same way. And their empathy for his situation opened up both their hearts and their wallets to him. So, there are a few lessons worth noting here: 1) The Power of Storytelling: Ogilvy’s modification of the sign from a request to a narrative evoked imagery and emotion that changed how the message was received. 2) Empathy Drives Action: When people can put themselves in someone else’s shoes, even if just for a moment, they are more likely to act with kindness and generosity. 3) Creativity in Problem-Solving: Ogilvy’s approach to helping went beyond the immediate and obvious, reminding us to think outside the box when solving problems.
