Denver Health's School-based Health Centers (SBHCs) now offer a paid Health Care Entry Program (HCEP) for Denver Public School students interested in health care careers. Made possible by a grant from The Colorado Health Foundation, the program gives students hands-on experience working with medical assistants and helps them prepare for certification programs. HCEP offers a new pathway to a health care career for students straight out of high school. Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) provide clinical training support to help ensure that healthcare professionals are skilled and prepared to serve in primary and preventative care roles in rural and medically underserved communities. Last year, more than 30,000 health profession students participated in facilitated rotations, with 44% of those placements in rural areas and 59% in primary care settings. These hands-on experiences shape the next generation of healthcare providers committed to working in the communities that need them the most, with 85% of trainees serving in medically underserved areas. "My advice for future students, lean into each other, build that community of trust, and take feedback as an opportunity to grow." This is what Ellison Chung distilled the Master of Health Leadership and Policy in Clinical Education into. After two years studying part-time, while balancing a position as an emergency room nurse, Ellison is now being recognized as a #risingstar in his industry! The journey required a fair bit of adaptation, something Ellison excelled at. "I remember there was one project where our team had the most amount of feedback and it felt like we had failed to deliver a quality presentation." It took a reframing to grow comfortable with this form of learning: "However, in our debrief, we recognized that our project only received that much feedback because partners were genuinely invested in our vision and wanting us to succeed in future iterations. Once we got that reframe and a little cheering up, we thrived!" It was a collaborative rather than critical approach that really helped Ellison to excel. "Through reading and interpreting #ESG reports, I started to understand how changes don’t need to be large, but start with the individual." As I witness the deeply disappointing cultural shift ripping through our society and across the globe, it has become clear that equity is no longer the goal.  Instead, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, or “DEI”, has been weaponized.  As a result, healthcare institutions’ commitment to educating providers about implicit bias, health disparities, and health equity has weakened. Efforts to maintain current and implement new equitable policies to address social determinants of health, long-standing health disparities, and poor health outcomes have stalled. Still, I remain passionate in my belief that What Is Race & Why Does It Matter: Implicit Bias & Health Equity Education for ALL is the foundational education that healthcare providers need to begin exploring how our society defines race and how our lived experience from the perspective of race impacts the care we provide, patients’ perceptions, experiences, and health outcomes. However, given the current climate, I have decided to suspend offering Continuing Education credits for the course starting December 1st, 2024.  To receive 2.0 CEUs, please complete the course before the deadline. You will still have access to the content for one year after starting. What Is Race & Why Does It Matter: Implicit Bias & Health Equity Education for ALL is my life’s work. So, I will continue to offer the course without Continuing Education credits at a reduced price, hoping that curious individuals and brave institutions will find the content and experience valuable.
