Indeed, the two houses are linked not only by cognac, but also by blood and by their origins in Great Britain & Irland The Hennessys and the Martells: strategic and genealogical alliances around cognac   The marriage of Jacques Hennessy to Marthe Martell in 1795, followed by that of their daughter Lucy to a cousin Jean-Gabriel Martell in 1816, may come as a surprise. Beyond all other considerations, they sealed the alliance between the two main rival cognac houses. Fervent Catholics of Irish origin, the Hennessys were demonstrating their desire to maintain good relations with the Protestant milieu, of which "the Martell cousins" were a part. This alliance of interests between the two great Cognac families gradually developed into a genuine solidarity that lasted well into the 20th century. Personal ties gradually took precedence over economic rivalry. A Martell living in London in the 1810s marketed Hennessy cognac for some time. Following the First World War, discussions began between the two companies' directors to stem the fall in exports that was hitting the cognac trade hard. In the face of these difficulties, they led in October 1923 to the signing of an original partnership agreement, in the form of a cross-shareholding between the two companies, which ensured a return to prosperity. Otherwise known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, the 1904 World’s Fair lasted seven months and attracted nearly 20 million visitors from around the world. Among its myriad attractions: -- a butter sculpture of President Theodore Roosevelt -- babies in incubators -- an ice skating rink with a daily “snowstorm.” However, it also served a significant role in food history by popularizing many foods that still are enjoyed by the American public today. Some culinary delights first showcased at the 1904 World’s Fair include: ---> Dr. Pepper – The drink was created in 1885 but wasn’t known outside of its Waco, TX home until it was served at the fair. ---> Ice cream cones – Both ice cream and edible cones had been around independently, but legend has it that at the fair, an ice cream vendor turned to a neighboring cone vendor when he ran out of cups, and the sweet treat was born. ---> Hot dogs – both sausages and buns were available before the fair. However, they allegedly were put together by a vendor who ran out of the gloves he sold for holding the sausages. He wrapped the sausages in buns instead and created this classic snack. ---> Iced tea – The fair was the first documented evidence of this popular drink. A hot tea seller was trying to make money on a hot day at the fair, so he cooled his drinks by dumping ice into it. Now, 80 percent of all tea in the US is iced. ---> Cotton candy – cotton candy was not a new invention, but it was very laborious to make the spun sugar treat. Candy makers William Morrison and John Wharton invented an electric machine in 1899 to make the treat and brought it to the fair, where they sold the confection under the name “fairy floss.” The 1904 World’s Fair left an enduring legacy, not only as a spectacle of innovation and culture but also as a pivotal moment in the evolution of American culinary traditions.
