Quick thoughts on road traffic, traffic lights and road transportation within Sydney. Each time I have spent on the road in recent times, I’ve noticed there’s that one lane or set of lanes with little or no traffic owing to the fact the traffic lights are on green for as long as the grass remains green, as expected, yes! Then there’s always that other lane, jammed packed with vehicles and heavy with traffic, eventually, when the lights do turn green, it’s only for a fraction a minute. Here’s my proposition, rather than have the cameras installed at the traffic lights capture traffic offenders only, generating stupendous amounts of revenue for the government, why not repurpose those cameras to also analyse and detect what lanes have the longest and shortest traffic queues. Compute the logic gates XOR, OR , AND …etc accordingly. if else statement and free up the longest waiting lane when there’s little to no traffic on the lanes with short queues. Test on certain streets and observe the effectiveness in those areas.
