Our new publication with my PhD student DANYANG LEI, Prof Jean Woo, and Rina Ko on housing preference for ageing-in-place. This study explores older adults’ preferences on design and service features that would promote ageing-in-place in private housing setting in a high density urban context, like Hong Kong. The study is part of a larger study on the development of a residential design guide for healthy ageing, supported by Chinachem Group. The study results will feed into the new design guide, with an aim to update the existing age-friendly design guide and foster advancement in the private sector. #aginginplace #seniorliving #healthyaging #housingdesign

Thank you Equal Opportunities Commission for inviting me to share our experience in Hou2 Living Gallery @ City One Shatin, which was a participatory estate improvement programme initiated by Happy Ageing Lab. It’s my honor to join the panel with Mr James Chan (CEO and Executive Director, Hong Kong Housing Society), Ar King Kwok Cheung (Assistant Director, ArchSD), moderated by Dr Joseph Kwan. I wish to borrow Joseph’s remark from his presentation to speak about how we should make progress to improve the inclusiveness of our society: To achieve the vision, we need strong political will and commitment. Our Happy Ageing Lab is committed to work with public/private sectors, stakeholders and community members to improve the age-friendliness of the built environment and develop innovative housing models for promoting healthy ageing and ageing-in-place. While there are dozens of NGOs and organizations (like us) working in different fields for the betterment of older adults’ living condition, strong policies and cross-sectoral collaboration are much needed to create timely and impactful changes. Thank you once again Equal Opportunities Commission for organizing this wonderful symposium!
Hong Kong is facing a demographic shift, with projections showing that at least one in every three persons will be 65 or above 👴 👵in just over two decades. Enhancing accessibility across all aspects of everyday life will be crucial to ensuring that the city remains a vibrant, inclusive, and liveable urban environment 🏙️for people of all abilities and ages. On 15 July 2024, the EOC organised the Accessible for All@Hong Kong Symposium at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, providing a unique platform for exchanges and discussions on ways to build a more accessible and inclusive environment. The event attracted around 300 participants. Ms Winnie HO Wing-yin, Secretary for Housing of the HKSAR Government, was the Guest of Honour. During the opening ceremony, Snail CHEN Tsz-kin, a 15-year-old YouTuber who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy and relies on his wheelchair for mobility, shared his dream to break limits and explore different places without barriers. In her opening remarks, EOC Chairperson Ms Linda LAM Mei-sau said, “In the face of a rapidly ageing population, the demand for barrier-free facilities in Hong Kong society is becoming increasingly urgent. Ensuring that people of different ages, abilities, and physical conditions can access premises, use transportation, enjoy various public facilities and services, and fully participate in society is a present and future challenge for Hong Kong. The EOC is hosting the Symposium to gather diverse insights, facilitate in-depth discussions, encourage experience-sharing, and explore ways to eliminate various visible and invisible barriers in society, such that we can transform Hong Kong into an inclusive, accessible, and age-friendly city.” Bringing together policymakers, pioneering researchers, and industry thought leaders from Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, the three thematic panel sessions and three showcases led to fruitful discussions on practical solutions for removing physical and digital barriers, highlighted the latest innovations in universal design and accessible technology, and promoted the development of an inclusive smart city. With in-depth presentations focusing on the issue of accessibility in various sectors, including architecture, housing, innovation technology, banking, and healthcare, the Symposium also served as a vital platform for cross-sector knowledge exchange. Thank you to all the speakers and participants for making the event a great success! Very positive to see the formation of this taskforce and hope it will advance the age-friendly standards for both publicly accessible spaces and other spaces, including housing units and workplaces. Support!
【Advancing Elderly-Friendly Living: HKHS Supports Government Task Force】 The Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) is proud to announce its participation in the Government's "Task Force on Promoting Elderly-friendly Building Design," which convened its first meeting today. HKHS stands firm in its commitment to facilitate ageing in place and is set to render full support to the Task Force's objectives. With a seat at the Task Force, our CEO will bring forth HKHS’s knowledge, sharing findings and practical feedback from its research and application of universal design principles and accessibility features. HKHS's dedication to creating age-friendly living spaces is exemplified through innovative projects such as the "Senior Citizen Residences Scheme" and other initiatives tailored to the housing needs of the elderly. Our proactive approach was also demonstrated in our 2020 study, where we explored age-friendly design features in domestic units and created mock-up flat prototypes across various housing types. These served as a tangible showcase of our adaptable design concepts and fostered collaborative dialogues with stakeholders. As a valued partner of the Government, HKHS is honoured to be recognised for its contributions to promoting elderly-friendly facilities and furthering the concept of ageing in place. We are proud to be at the forefront of this important endeavour, working together to ensure that our senior citizens can enjoy the comfort of ageing in place in their own homes. #HKHS #ElderlyFriendlyDesign #AgeingInPlace #SustainableCommunities #InclusiveDesign #HousingInnovation
