This is my FAVORITE time of the year! Happy to support the STEAM-H essay contest both personally and also as one of our many corporate community initiatives. "The Commonwealth of Virginia has so many talented women who are contributing their time and talent through their work on the frontlines of our healthcare system, educating young minds, and leading the way in businesses focused on technology to further communities and continue American innovation. However, as of 2023, there is still a gender gap in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Computer Arts, Math, and Healthcare (STEAM-H). Specifically, the 2023 National Girls Collaborative Project’s State of Girls and Women in STEM[1] report finds that women remain underrepresented in the science and engineering workforce, where women comprise only 34% of workers in STEAM organizations. Diving even deeper, in the STEAM concentrations, only 25.2% of women work in computer and mathematical sciences, and a mere 16.5% work in engineering areas despite 50% of women earning their bachelor’s degrees in Science and Engineering, according to the NCGP report. Meanwhile, the AAUW reports that nearly 80% of the healthcare workforce are women, but less than 25% of health executives and board members are women, and only 1/3 are doctors [2] The positive news is that young women across the Commonwealth want to break through that gap and contribute their talents to the sciences. To this end, the Virginia Council on Women (VCW) is thankful to be able to continue our work to inspire and empower young women across Virginia to think of others and think about the future that awaits them in the areas of STEAM-H by launching our 13th Annual STEAM-H Essay Contest. The contest, supported by Governor Glenn Youngkin and First Lady Suzanne Youngkin, focuses on supporting female Virginia high school seniors by providing financial scholarships to youth across the Commonwealth. The VCW is a volunteer, governor-appointed council whose statutory purpose is to help women reach their full potential and maximize their contributions as wage earners and citizens to the Commonwealth and society. Over the past twelve years, the VCW has awarded more than $185,000 in scholarships to deserving students pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Computer Arts, Math, and Healthcare. Hi everyone! Exciting news - I'm bringing back my open-door mentoring sessions for the next two weeks! This time, I'm hoping to make a difference by raising money for a good cause. As a member of the board of NY Urban League Young Professionals, we are raising funds for the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Scholarship - an initiative to help deserving high school seniors in the community alleviate the financial burden of higher education. Here's how it works: In exchange for a donation to the cause, you'll get 30 minutes of my time to use as you wish. In previous sessions, I've given resume feedback, interview tips, answered questions on how to progress/pursue a career in strategy or advertising in general, and in some cases just offered some kind words & life advice. To participate, simply donate what you can to the cause using this link (every amount is welcome even if it is just $10 or $20): https://lnkd.in/eyQdeiXe. Be sure to select me as the team lead you are attributing your donation to so we can see our collective impact! Then, find a time on my calendar at this link: https://lnkd.in/efxK7za4 Finally, when it's time for your appointment, please bring a list of questions/topics you'd like to discuss. If you're not looking for mentoring, you can still help make a difference by donating to the fund directly or sharing this post with your network. Let's work together to support the future leaders in our community🖤

Do donors donate to gain influence? The short answer is yes. In his latest Substack, Eric Dezenhall touches on recent controversies at Penn and Harvard and explores: -The balance between philanthropy and policy influence. -The effects of recent high-profile resignations. -The impact of donor actions on campus culture and free speech. This is a must-read for understanding the nuanced interplay of money, power, and education. Check it out. https://lnkd.in/ejyNwCa5

Non-Profit State Spotlight Super Tuesday is upon us. As we all know, election years are both inspiring and anxiety-inducing. As a civic educator at heart and a 50-stater, I love learning more than just how each state votes. Election years are an opportunity to learn what's happening within each state and the organizations trying to make an impact. During the last presidential election, I ran a small fundraising campaign that supported a nonprofit in every state. This year, I am setting my sights on unearthing new nonprofits and organizations across the United States that are making significant strides in their respective fields. My aim? To shine a spotlight on those harnessing the power of technology, education, and civic action to make a tangible difference. Starting with three of the Super Tuesday states today, I'll share more updates about nonprofits in different states over the next few months. If you have one to recommend for future states, please use this site: https://lnkd.in/e9sc8g35 If you have other non-profits you want to highlight in these first few states, put them in the comments below. #america #united #education #technology #amoreperfectunion ------------- Oklahoma Educational Technology Trust OETT's mission is to equip Oklahoma common schools and CareerTech students with the technology and technological skills necessary to compete in the global marketplace. As we look to the future, investing in education stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity. The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) exemplifies this spirit, serving as a catalyst for transformation and progress. Here's why donating to UTSA is a powerful investment in the future: Empowering Students: Your donation to UTSA opens doors for students from diverse backgrounds, providing scholarships and financial aid that make higher education accessible. Our largest feeder colleges come from Alamo Colleges District, which annually enrolls the largest number of foster youth. UTSA is a hub of higher education for non-traditional students (such as myself) who really benefit from every donation. Advancing Research: UTSA is at the forefront of cutting-edge research. Achieving tier one in research in 2020 status reflects UTSA's commitment to excellence in research and innovation across various disciplines, furthering its impact on the local community and beyond. From breakthroughs in healthcare to innovations in technology, your donation accelerates progress and fosters innovation. Enhancing Infrastructure: By donating to UTSA, you contribute to the enhancement of campus infrastructure, including state-of-the-art facilities, resources, and student housing. These improvements create an environment conducive to learning, research, and collaboration, ensuring that students and faculty have the tools they need to succeed. Enriching the Community: UTSA is deeply rooted in the San Antonio community, as a hispanic serving institute that regularly partners with Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU). Your donation has a ripple effect that extends far beyond the campus gates. From outreach programs to community partnerships, UTSA is committed to making a positive impact on the region. Fostering Excellence: Your generosity sends a powerful message of support to the UTSA community, inspiring excellence and fostering a culture of philanthropy. Leading by example, you encourage others to join in the effort to support UTSA's mission and vision. Join me in supporting The College for Health, Community and Policy at UTSA. Together, we can make a difference and build a brighter tomorrow for generations to come. https://lnkd.in/gM-uX2dt #buildthenest #HCAPLRG
