Are you an industry where customer reviews aren't readily available? Me too. It's kinda taboo to leave a shit review for agencies since it's so relationship driven. Here's a list of other places we go to learn about our customers tensions: 💡 Reddit forums, search things like "fired my marketing agency" or "why agencies suck" 💡 Glassdoor reviews. Anonymous employees give all the tea. 💡 Consumer reports. We like eMarketer.com and similar sites (pew, reuters) that have some free data around trends and perceptions around marketing agencies 💡 LinkedIn poll. Literally just poll people and ask. Sift through the results and only calculate based on people who are in your target. 💡

The marketing industry arguably tolerates more pockets of waste than most others. Why? Unclear goals. If you don't know what you're working toward, how do you know what's working? Is your increased follower count getting you business results? What about those web visits? How important is lowered CAC if brand sentiment is poor? What do you need more: increased revenue or lower cost of production? Most marketing data can be spun to make the point you want. Knowing the data that gets you closer to the goal is everything.

Assume you’re not going to get it. Assume the prospect will ghost your contract. Assume the hiring manager sends an auto reject email. The moment you’re done with your pitch and you’re in the waiting period is the moment when you keep moving. Getting a no is a lot easier when you have several options. And the people who get the most just keep planting seeds until something grows. Waiting for someone else to make a decision for your livelihood is soils crushing. What are you waiting for? Go plant.

Hate to be a bummer but the best marketing usually isn't sexy. Most of a marketing mix that gets a strong return: - Took trial, error, testing, optimizing, more testing, more optimizing - Was planned in a spreadsheet - Doesn't overwhelm you with emotions - Is designed to get an action tied to a specific campaign goal - Has to be monitored closely and thought about - Relies on hypotheses that get tested Do I wish marketers could just come up with 🔥 campaign concepts, launch them on only the coolest platforms and see a sick return? OF COURSE. But most of our work is in the data nerd-ism, sparked by curiosity, an obsession for watching things closely and understanding them. And it's not always sexy.
