Recently, I worked with an engineering leader at a significant crossroads.
After years in his role, he felt stagnant and lacked passion. With no new opportunities at his current company, he was eager for a new challenge.
Sound familiar?
We boosted his confidence to re-enter the job market. After acing a round of interviews at a company he found through his network, he finally received an offer.
Time to celebrate!
But wait.
He was not in a celebratory mood... because he was struck by the question you face when an idea becomes a real decision:
𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁?
In your career, you spend so much time working towards finding the opportunity, you often neglect to prepare for the moment of decision!
To make informed and confident decisions, it's crucial to start the decision-making process before an offer is on the table.
The key ingredients?
Your 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 and your 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.
Values act as a compass for your life, guiding you towards your true north and helping you understand what matters most at the end of the day.
Your vision, on the other hand, is the destination — a clear, detailed picture of the future you aspire to.
𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀
Core values drive your decisions, helping you evaluate if your life aligns with what you truly want. Sometimes, values conflict—like career growth versus love and community.
When deciding, such as relocating for a job, determine which value matters more now.
Do you prioritize growth, thinking you can rebuild community, or stay connected, potentially sacrificing career advancement?
𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Vision is more than a single goal like “Get a promotion.” It's a vivid picture of the life you want, covering work, home, relationships, hobbies, and more. If values are your compass, vision is your destination.
With clear values and vision, making major life decisions is easier. You know the right questions to ask and can trust your assessment.
Don’t wait until an offer lands to figure out your values and vision; it’s already too late.
Often, the pull of a higher title, significant pay raise, or ego boost can cloud your judgment.
That's why it's crucial to do the inner work in advance.
Understanding your values and vision ensures you don't fall into the trap of making decisions that don't align with your ultimate life goals.
That’s #LifestyleEngineering.
And it starts on the inside (with you), not on the outside (with a new job).
Turns out, when it comes to vision... you may not be as clear as you think.
