Recently, in Fall of 2023, I got the extreme privilege of organizing workshops and doing a couple talks like this at the See Change Sessions in Vermont. A lot of what I talk about in student lectures, conference talks and even inspiration sessions inside companies is based on the seminal work #cradletocradle by McDonough/Braungart. Here I'm talking specifically about the Technical side of the two-metabolisms definition set forth in that book. (the other is the Biological). The really fascinating thing, to me, about sustainability as a whole, is that it is not a singular endpoint, nor is it singularly defined. This fact can be overwhelming, but when you dig into it, it's actually a freeing and surprisingly creative endeavor. I love that the work that I'm doing is expanding my mind, as well as potentially expanding the solution set for what it means to be sustainable. All of us in this line of work are building off of similar foundations, but taking it in myriad, fascinating directions. I love it and I love this cohort of passionate folks. Also, I'm sporting a pretty decent mullet here— itself, both an achievement and a challenge to taste and common sense. Clearly I have my own vision and path in many things.
