As the leaves begin to turn golden red here in the valley and the abundance of rowan berries slowly begins to fall, we are turning our gaze toward our ‘Fall Back’ retreat at the end of the month. It is a precious time of taking stock, reviewing the year and preparing for the time of hibernation and reflection that the darker months provide. We have TWO spaces available if you are called - https://lnkd.in/eKHugE3w The concept of a ‘retreat’ – spiritual or otherwise – is one that most of us assume we are very familiar with: a time away from our everyday lives, sometimes in silence, sometimes very definitely not, where we can pause, rest, rejuvenate. It is a practice as old as humanity itself. It is also a hugely attractive and seductive space to spend time in. Given the increasingly fraught and fragile state of the world, who wouldn’t simply want to disappear to a safe place and contemplate the meaning of life, hoping against hope that the tides of conflict and climate change don’t lap at your door? Contrary to the assumption of retreat being all about time away from the world, we practice retreat here in our home in mid Wales specifically for people to support themselves to be of service in the world. We have witnessed so many times that the way people do this is by taking the wisdom and insight they learn on retreat back into their lives. Great wisdom teachers down the centuries have taught that the true purpose of a retreat is to be found in the act of returning. This is by far the hardest part of the process of retreat and yet it is its purpose and raison d’etre. All the work and retreats we offer at Emergence follow the natural patterns of deep mythic structures and rites of passage. The three specific stages we work with are Severance – the act of separating from our lives; Threshold – the liminal betwixt and space between worlds, the space of retreat; and finally, Incorporation – the act of returning to our lives carrying the gifts and embodying the wisdom we have learnt. We often sit with our retreatants on their final mornings with us, fresh faced and open hearted, and have to break the news to them that the hardest work is yet to come. As great spiritual teacher Jack Kornfield referred to it in the title of one of his wonderful books – ‘After the Ecstasy, the Laundry’… We retreat so that we may be changed, reconnected to ourselves, the world and each other. But the work of the retreat is not complete, not fulfilled, until we return to our lives and put our learnings into lived daily practice. This is the Manifestation part and looks different for everyone. As T.S Eliot so memorably wrote in ‘Four Quartets’ – We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time. Arriving Where We Started - https://lnkd.in/ehrXfwPR
