It's the story of African American Women In Cinema (AAWIC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has been the unwavering backbone of support for women filmmakers for the past twenty-five years. For a quarter of a century, AAWIC has been a beacon of light for both experienced and novice filmmakers, directors, producers, screenwriters, and actors. Their mission is not just about showcasing talent; it's about expanding, exploring, and creating opportunities for minority women in the entertainment industry. AAWIC is the platform where dreams come true, where artistic women find their path, their voice, and their place in a traditionally male-dominated industry. But they don't stop at showcasing talent. Want to increase the impact of your company's charitable giving? Get your staff involved. Involving Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) in philanthropic giving empowers staff to make impactful, community-centered grants to organizations they're passionate about. Dr. Akilah Watkins' thoughtful letter on the end of Black History Month reminded me of The Bridgespan Group's data on Black-led nonprofits: "the unrestricted net assets of the Black-led organizations are 76 percent smaller than their white-led counterparts." According to data from Initiative for Strategic Volunteer Engagement, the majority of #nonprofit #volunteer programs are funded through unrestricted assets. If you put those two facts together, a clear implication emerges: to mobilize volunteers, Black-led organizations need our unrestricted support. They are disproportionately pulling from their core budgets to create these programs. Your individual donations (and corporate matching) provide this fuel. In case you haven't heard, The American Alliance for Equal Rights (AAER) has recently sued the Atlanta-based Fearless Fund – led by Black women and committed to providing grants, tools, and mentorship to women of color – claiming that its program for Black female entrepreneurs is racially discriminatory. As you know, we're huge advocates for creating a shift toward equity, and these grants and tools are extremely important to create change. We've signed a petition in resistance to this lawsuit, and in favor of continuing the philanthropic work that prioritizes historically excluded individuals, so a true shift toward equity is possible. We are committed to making it easier for organizations and people to give, across all dimensions of society, not harder. This petition is a call on the courts to dismiss this lawsuit and uphold the First Amendment rights of philanthropic organizations, charitable nonprofits, and individual donors to give in ways that align with their values. According to a YOUNG BLACK & GIVING BACK INSTITUTE Report, a majority of Black-led and Black-benefitting nonprofits are led by Black women. Most of these organizations survive on operating budgets of less than $500,000, with a third surviving on just $30,000. This #InternationalWomensDay, we honor the commitment, dedication, and sacrifices of Black women. For centuries, they have led, organized, and mobilized to help their communities thrive despite tough challenges and systemic injustices. Philanthropy needs to do better – less than 2% of all giving in the U.S. goes toward women and girls.

In 2023, while women became the majority of law firm associates (50.3%) for the first time ever, we still continue to be vastly underrepresented in leadership, comprising only 27.7% of partners and 23.7% of equity partners. Join Ms. JD as we continue to invest in and provide resources for aspiring women attorneys and practicing women attorneys to achieve gender parity! This week is our annual Giving Day campaign, where we are working to raise money to fund vital programs that uplift young girls and women. Does anyone else struggle to find their "Tribe" of nonprofit professionals? I couldn't find the right group, so I created Black Women With Nonprofits. It has been the gift that keeps on giving. Meet Joyce Senior, PhD, PMP, who is a BWWN member. She epitomizes the essence of Black Girl Magic as the co-founder of My Hair My Health PDX .Her passionate dedication lies in establishing safe spaces for Black women and their families, fostering collaborative communities that redefine the trajectory of holistic health and wellness, unfettered by constraints. Although we initially connected via LinkedIn through my nonprofit coaching services, Dr. Joyce and I have cultivated a burgeoning sisterhood that embodies the very magic we acclaim when we say "My Tribe." Further validating the importance of the Black Women With Nonprofits Group. Black Women With Nonprofits is the conduit through which fellow Black women can find their tribe. There is no longer a need to contort ourselves to fit into spaces led by leaders who don't look, speak, or commiserate with our journey as Black founders. BWWN is the space where our voice can resonate authentically.
