Despite women driving pop culture in 2023 (thanks to Barbie, Taylor Swift, and Beyonce) and Black culture being the cornerstone of American arts and entertainment, Black women are rarely the ones driving marketing decisions for big brands. I've never seen any data that shows men are better sellers than women. In fact, I've only ever seen the opposite. See this passage from Lori Richardson's book, "She Sells." 📈 Higher win rates 💰 Higher quota attainment ✊ Better challenger sellers And yet... lower comp. 77% compared to male sellers. I can't do the book full justice here. It's jam-packed with must read info on attracting, hiring, onboarding, retaining, and promoting women in sales. Great stuff, Lori. LinkedIn followers my class is in session. Entry requirements: Empathy and Compassion. Black women in the fashion industry. Let’s talk about it! 1. Lack of Representation. Black women are underrepresented in fashion campaigns, runways, and magazines compared to their white counterparts. This lack of representation perpetuates stereotypes and limits opportunities for Black women in the industry. 2. Limited Access to Opportunities: Black women often have limited access to high-profile fashion opportunities, such as brand collaborations, partnerships, and designer roles. This can hinder career progression and visibility in the industry. 3. Discrimination: Black women frequently experience discrimination based on race in the fashion industry. This includes biases in hiring, casting, and promotion decisions, as well as systemic inequities. 4. Cultural Appropriation: Black women's contributions to fashion and style are often appropriated without credit or recognition. Our cultural heritage and unique aesthetics are exploited for profit, without equitable representation or compensation. Countless white women spend millions attempting to look like Black women, with unsightly lip injections causing infections and lumps and may result in serious surgery. Overall, the fashion industry has a long history of systemic racism and inequality that disproportionately impacts Black women. Advocacy, representation, and inclusivity efforts are crucial to addressing these challenges and fostering a more equitable and diverse fashion landscape. In the comments let’s talk about number 4 in depth. The psychologist within me observes the trend of white women getting lip injections and BBLs to mimic natural African features. It's like hating on me while trying to emulate my looks. This dynamic raises intriguing questions about the psychology of admiring beauty while mistreating the person embodying it. Let's delve into this complex equation and unpack the underlying motivations and implications. And isn’t it great that she is getting commissioned - meaning getting visibility & dollars - for her point of view on the world. It gives hope : brands can go beyond. They can position themselves in our societies - and not only on a marketing mapping - while bringing out beauty. Leveraging (sponsoring?) a genuine gaze on the world to make it progress is a good start.
