It is hard to believe that another year has come and gone! Before time slips away, let's take a moment to review some HB highlights from 2023! Haag Brown officially launched HB Ag, a new division of the company which focuses exclusively on real estate and investment opportunities within the agricultural sector. Lead by Jordan Leatherman, a born and raised diversified row crop and livestock farmer, HB Ag aims to provide customized solutions for farmers, agribusinesses, investors, and landowners. Hytrol Conveyor Company, the world leader in design and manufacturing of material handling systems, was the first to open within the HB’s Ecommerce Park, Northeast Arkansas’ first ultramodern logistics, warehousing, and digital fulfillment park strategically located along I-555 at the gateway into Jonesboro. HB Industrial partnered with Roach Manufacturing Corporation to create the first life-style focused, master-planned, mixed-use development in Trumann, Arkansas. Spanning over 100+ acres along I-555, Steel Creek Development will feature multiple restaurants, stores, single and multi-family housing, offices, warehousing, and an event venue all nestled amid multiple water features, green spaces, and a connective walking/riding trail system. The project’s anchor, Roach Conveyors - a world class material handling systems corporation - broke ground on their 80,000 square foot warehouse and distribution center and we look forward to announcing a number of additional projects within the development soon. Haag Brown Medical Holdings completed the first ever NEA Baptist Urgent Care PLUS, an 18,000 square foot ultra-modern facility featuring Red Wolf Clinic Primary Care, Outpatient imaging services and an Urgent Care PLUS all in (1) central location off I-555. HB Development transformed the former Teletech building on Caraway Road into Urbantech - a reimagined corporate office project which is now home to S&H Systems and Red River Pharmacy. Through extensive leasing efforts, HB Commercial brought The Uptown to full-capacity for the first time since the property was purchased in 2017 and re-developed. HB partnered with Arkansas Business Publishing Group to present a special edition growth report showcasing Jonesboro’s progress to a statewide business audience. Additional Accomplishments: HB Principal Joshua Brown was recognized by Arkansas Money & Politics as one of the Top 100 Professionals of 2023. Agrihoods: Addressing food insecurity, real estate, and building communities..... I came across the great article on the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative addressing access to fresh produce in a food desert in Detroit which made the research continue. Key points for community economic development initiatives: Governments can match crowd funding social innovation initiatives to address issues. Access to local food is an attractive value proposition for investment and talent. Whether we call it food "security" or "insecurity" issues, people are struggling with low incomes and high bills (such as rent) to buy food, agrihoods build communities. Looking to the older tradition of breaking bread together, we all connect through food, so by taking advantage of this unused land, people meet and work with their neighbours, providing access to local produce, (which improves physical and mental health) and can have far-reaching benefits including training, entrepreneurship, investment attraction, and leveraging funding from both the private and public sectors to make real impact. I would like to hear your thoughts on what I think is a powerful initiative. https://lnkd.in/gDP45zwb

Here’s a picture of my garden taken in 2017 which recently popped up in my Google feed. Next to it is my garden today, 7 years later. Little did my wife Kim and I realise our decision to downsize would require an upsized effort in our new garden! Our move to the northern beaches in Sydney from the leafier upper north shore meant we had to completely rethink the garden design, what to plant, how to manage it in a different micro-climate. It brought flashbacks to when I helped established new teams in my previous corporate career – how to design them, who to select in key roles, and how to lead them. Never did I envisage in 2017 that this garden would become the sanctuary it is today. The virtues of time, patience, and care have created what it is today. I soon realised tendering to a garden is no different to nurturing team members – both flourish from investing time, patience, and care. To nurture the ‘garden of talent’, leaders need to continuously: - Fertilise with feedback – feedback is the nutrient that fertilises others’ development and growth. - Water for success – as water is a garden’s lifeline for survival, learning is other’s lifeline for success. - Prune to mastery – as we prune to guide and shape a garden’s beauty, opportunities guide and shape others to achieve mastery. Team members, as do gardens, take time to grow, develop, and form. Allow the virtues of patience and care to enable others to become. Trust, with time and commitment, the return on your investment in others, will be realised.

I came across this article from ABC last night and it really sparked my interest. Agrihoods are apparently popping up everywhere in the US and the first is planned for Australia in QLD First off, what is an Agrihood? A new style of neighbourhood that brings together agriculture, via a working farm or community garden, and housing. It’s being driven from a desire for people to be closer to their food source. It’s an interesting concept and whilst community gardens are not a new concept, designing our neighbourhoods around a working farm that provides all the food required for that community, rather then continue with urban sprawl and push our farms further and further out from our urban centres, we can incorporate them into our communities. It could have a wide range of benefits, including providing a more sustainable source of food for our growing population and communities. Yet how do we conceptualise this model? As the ABC article suggests, it will take a collaboration of developers, state and local governments and the community in order for this model of neighbourhood development to be successful. And it’s a long term commitment to change in planning and societal concepts of what does a neighbourhood look like. Suburbs and cities have evolved over many years and this Agrihood concept almost seems like a return to more traditional forms of neighbourhoods or villages. Are agrihoods another form of counter-urbanism? I’m keen to see how this Agrihood in QLD turns out and if it is the start of something here in Australia. #agrihood #urbanism

The Bandqus carparkio... is a miserable forlorn species of tree eking out a dreary and unprofitable existence never reaching even semi maturity, planted by builders in a shovel full of builders sand with a complete absence of nutrient or water supply surrounded by impervious hard landscape and yet is so popular with shopping car parks that they seem to expect it to thrive! Even worse, some alien being decided that these trees were getting way out of hand and thus decided to utterly wreck their carbohydrate production leading to even more stress throughout the next year...!!! 😱 Question. When are retail parks going to learn that a quality green infrastructure greatly adds to the profitability and attractiveness of the retail park and thus planting trees with proper root structures such as www.greenblue.com is an excellent investment. A bit of quality tree care would also help...!
