#Electronichealthrecords #ehrs are the backbone of modern healthcare delivery and vital to #healthcare #quality - but they are not without faults. Poorly designed, maintained, or implemented #EHRs complicate #clinician #workflows and add to the administrative burden. In extreme cases, they may even contribute to #safety issues including #diagnosticerrors. This risk is particularly acute for #raredisease #patients given the long diagnostic odyssey of 7 years or more many patients are facing, the limited familiarity of most healthcare providers with our diseases, and the many different specialties involve in caring for many of our patients. Interesting article in Health Affairs forefront today outlining concrete and practical policy solutions to address this issue, including the role various stakeholders including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services #cms, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), the Joint Commission, and even FDA (as a model for data collection and event reporting) can play. No patient should be harmed just because an #EHR was not designed with the end-user in mind, obfuscates important clinical information, or is difficult to navigate and fit into clinical workflows.
