When applied as a diagnostic tool to identify the causative agent in pediatric meningitis, The Karius Test identified the presence of pathogen in 57% of the subjects with the causative pathogen detected in 36% vs. 23% in CSF culture vs. 17% in PCR panel. 14% of the subjects included in this cohort experienced changes in clinical management as a direct result of The Karius Test results. https://hubs.li/Q02qzR6G0 #meningitis #pediatric #diagnostics #cfDNA #mcfDNA #noninvasive #liquidbiopsy #healthcareinnovation #rapidtesting #infections #infection #infectiousdiseases #infectiousdisease #microbiology #bacteria #virus #CNS #CNSinfection #metagenomics

Mucormycosis is a rare and devastating angioinvasive infection that can be challenging to diagnose due to the low sensitivity of current noninvasive diagnostics and the lack of a “gold standard” reference test. Here is a retrospective case series of children with suspected mucormycosis where The Karius Test was utilized in the diagnostic evaluation. The study illustrates the ways in which microbial cell-free DNA testing such as The Karius Test can noninvasively contribute to the evaluation and management of at-risk, immunosuppressed patients suspected of mucormycosis. https://hubs.ly/Q02rYvs60 #mucormycosis #mcfDNA #ngs #Mucorales #pediatric #fungi #immunocompromised #diagnosis #metagenomics #cfDNA #liquidbiopsy #infection #infections #infectiousdisease #infectiousdiseases #healthcareinnovation #microbiology #noninvasive #rapiddiagnosis #rapidtest #sequencing #angioinvasive

Excited to share that our paper has been published! Our review dives into the current use of novel beta-lactams against resistant gram-negative bacteria and evidence of their efficacy in the pediatric population. Collaborating with Yusuf Garwan and Jacob Pritchard was a fantastic experience. Special thanks to Dr. Taylor Morrisette for the invaluable support throughout the process. Check out the article below. #pediatrics #infectiousdiseases

🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 I'm thrilled to announce that my dissertation project, "Hospitalization Trends for Airway Infections and In-Hospital Complications in Cleft Lip and Palate", has been published in JAMA Network Open! In this nationwide cohort study of 857,806 newborns, we found that children born with a cleft lip and/or palate experience significantly higher rates of hospitalization for airway infections, increased in-hospital complications, and greater mortality risks compared to those without these conditions. These findings highlight the need for more targeted healthcare interventions and support for children with cleft lip or palate. A huge thanks to you, Alexander Kutz, for your invaluable guidance throughout this project and to all my co-authors for their support Dr. Claudia Gregoriano, Stephanie Hauser, Henrik Köhler, Philipp Schuetz, Beat Müller. #MedicalResearch #JAMA #CleftLipAndPalate #Pediatrics #Healthcare #AirwayInfections #PublicHealth #HospitalizationTrends

Neonatal jaundice is a common condition in newborns characterized by a yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. This yellowing is due to high levels of bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced during the normal breakdown of red blood cells. In newborns, the liver, which processes bilirubin, is often not fully developed and can struggle to remove bilirubin from the blood efficiently. This results in a temporary buildup of bilirubin, leading to jaundice. There are different types of neonatal jaundice, including: 1. **Physiological jaundice**: This is the most common type and usually appears 2-3 days after birth, peaking around the fourth or fifth day, and then gradually disappearing as the baby's liver matures. 2. **Breastfeeding jaundice**: This occurs in some breastfed babies in the first week of life, often because of feeding difficulties or dehydration. 3. **Breast milk jaundice**: This type appears after the first week and can persist for a month or more, likely due to substances in breast milk that increase bilirubin absorption from the intestines. 4. **Pathological jaundice**: This is less common and can be caused by underlying conditions such as blood group incompatibilities, infections, or genetic disorders. Most cases of neonatal jaundice are mild and resolve on their own. However, if bilirubin levels become too high, treatment is necessary to prevent complications. Common treatments include: - **Phototherapy**: The baby is placed under special blue lights that help break down bilirubin in the skin. - **Exchange transfusion**: In severe cases, the baby's blood may be replaced with donor blood to quickly reduce bilirubin levels. - **Adequate feeding**: Ensuring the baby is well-fed to promote regular bowel movements, which help eliminate bilirubin. Parents should monitor their newborn for signs of jaundice and consult a healthcare provider if the baby appears excessively yellow, especially if the yellowing extends to the arms or legs, or if the baby is difficult to wake, feeding poorly, or showing other signs of illness. Early detection and management are key to preventing complications. #NeontalJaundiceAwareness #Meducate

This winter, we're facing three major respiratory viruses: the well-known coronavirus and flu, and the lesser-known but formidable respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). RSV is a significant concern for pediatricians, as it's a leading cause of infant mortality, particularly affecting premature infants. In 2019, RSV resulted in 3.6 million hospital admissions and over 100,000 deaths in children under five, mainly in low-income countries. I worked with the excellent team at #Pfizer and Columbia Data Anlaytics to highlight the disparity in RSV's impact based on the area based socioeconomic status (SES). Targeted prevention strategies are crucial to ensure vulnerable groups have equitable opportunities to reduce RSV's burden. #RSV #HealthcareEquity #PublicHealth #PediatricCare #VirusPrevention #HealthDisparities #ChildHealth #GlobalHealth #HealthcareStrategy #InfectiousDiseases
