🎬 Sue's simple question echoes in all of us, and getting to this question wasn't easy for her at a difficult time in her career and her life. How do leaders lead at the next level? They get to know themselves, and they're able to connect deeply with the people on their teams. They're able to connect because they possess traits like empathy, and forgiveness, and flexibility. #Leadershipdevelopment is an on-going process, and not necessarily a tangible outcome at a given point in time! For those of us in the business of hiring, evaluating, or being leaders, there are a great many pitfalls that we have to avoid in order to be effective. Not least of these are our own biases and blindspots. In this TEDTalk, management historian Dr. Martin Gutmann expertly dissects one such blindspot: the tendency to celebrate and reward superficial activity over proven competence. Unsurprisingly, this can have a deleterious impact on organizational effectiveness, morale, and fiscal soundness--yet the practice endures. What are the attributes, accomplishments, and management approaches that we should prioritize instead to help our teams, organizations, and communities reach their fullest potential? My dad sent this to me knowing my deep interest in leadership, and watching it was time well spent. Just being aware of this bias is the first step toward avoiding it. I invite you to take a few minutes to listen to Dr. Guttman's incisive and often amusing thesis, and reflect on how we can resist perpetuating this cycle. #leadership #management #talentmanagement https://lnkd.in/e3_fy_bv
