Sergei Guriev has been appointed as the new Dean of London Business School. Some people say "it's an interesting choice" given "the context". For the segment of the business community of Russian origin currently working abroad, this news is incredibly important. Many of my friends (including myself) 'relocated' (I would call it something else, but whatever) almost two years ago. Many others are still relocating or planning to do so. In private conversations with my Russian friends, I have often heard the following concerns: > 'Don't you find that your colleagues in Western Europe have more cutting-edge experience? It's very unlikely you can compete with them.' > 'Don't they work faster and smarter?' > 'Are you sure your experience, mainly accumulated working in Russia and the CIS region, can bring value?' > 'How are you perceived in Western Europe being Russian?' All of these concerns prevent people from even attempting to compete in a new geographical market. The context of the last two years doesn't make it any easier to succeed in this 'job market entry' exercise. I still remember my first job interview in the initial months of my MBA journey. It was with Amazon, and the hiring manager was of Polish origin (well, historically, we are not the best neighbors). Six months since the war started. My personal decisions directly affected my professional career. Should I mention it in the interview? Would it be appropriate? What if the hiring manager also wants to ask about it but doesn't know how? Professionalism unites. This is what I appreciate about the business world. If your personal values align, and you can bring value to each other professionally, all other aspects are not a problem. And Guriev's appointment is a case in point.

With A-level results day tomorrow, I’d like to emphasise something very important: Please be mindful that everyone has different goals and expectations of themselves: → Some people are trying to get into their dream University. → Some people need certain grades for their reapplication process next year. → Some people don’t care about their grades and sat the exams for closure, and are now planning to double down on their side hustle. → Some people have had the toughest year of their life, and have still managed to come out of the other side. So here’s the simple question I ask after exam results: “Are you happy?” That’s all that matters right? If they’re happy, amazing! Celebrate with them, and be happy for them. If they’re not, be a good friend and ask them how you can best support them. But remember if it’s gone well for you, despite how it’s gone for other people, it’s okay to celebrate your success. And most importantly: celebrate everyone’s incredible hard work. To everyone expecting results tomorrow, absolute best of luck to you all. Be proud of yourself and your hard work. Hoping to see many new faces at UCL this September!!

What’s the one thing all educators have in common? They are all “experience architects”—shapers of what students will see, hear, and learn. Moreover, educators are “bid cultivators”—creators of opportunities that can change hearts, minds, and lives. One way educators can cultivate more “bids”? By inserting the following line into conversations with students: “Given your interest in [this topic], check out the #LinkedIn profile of [this person]! Like you, they also [started here] before [doing this] and then [doing this] and then [doing this].” "You can’t be what you can’t see,” as the adage goes. Students may not know there’s someone out there who is just like them—doing what they may not have even imagined was possible. It was an honor presenting at the 12th annual WorldStrides Higher Ed Custom Programs Global Education Summit, where more than 50 institutions and their leaders gathered to discuss graduate and business strategies and programming.
