𝐒𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐈𝐖𝐄𝐒 𝐑𝐄𝐅𝐋𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒: 𝐀 𝐉𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐄𝐘 𝐎𝐅 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐔𝐄𝐃 𝐆𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐓𝐇 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆🎉🎉🎉 During the second month of my internship, I was more deeply involved in project management, documentation, and site operations, particularly focusing on how these activities relate to quantity surveying. My activities during the month can be grouped as follows: 📌 Site Visit to Chivita Production Room I participated in a site visit to the Chivita production room alongside my supervisor. During the visit, I observed different types of conveyor systems, fillers, and panel trucks. My supervisor explained their functions, installation procedures, and peculiarities. This visit enhanced my understanding of site operations and how quantity surveyors need to align their cost estimates with on-ground realities. 📌Preparation of Bill of Quantities (BOQs) for a Molasses Tank I worked on preparing the BOQ for the construction and fabrication of a 180m³ molasses tank. This involved calculating the quantities of materials required and preparing a detailed cost estimate for the project. I contributed to the financial planning and budgeting process. Accurately estimating the quantities and costs ensures that the project remains within budget and provides a reliable forecast of resources needed. 📌 Work on the Construction of a Pipe Bridge I contributed to the project by calculating the quantities of materials required for the construction of a pipe bridge. This included obtaining rates from suppliers and finalizing the BOQ. Material estimation and cost analysis are at the heart of quantity surveying. For the pipe bridge project, I was able to apply these skills by calculating the necessary materials, negotiating the best rates with suppliers, and ensuring that the BOQ was comprehensive and accurate. 📌📌Market Research and Supplier Rate Comparison I reached out to two suppliers to gather rates for the materials needed for the pipe bridge project. After comparing these rates, I selected the most cost-effective option and incorporated it into the BOQ. Conducting market research and comparing supplier rates is a crucial task for quantity surveyors. By selecting the most favorable rates, I helped ensure that the project would stay within budget while maintaining the required quality standards. The second month of my internship provided me with hands-on experience in project estimation, documentation, and site operations. I gained valuable insights into the practical aspects of quantity surveying, particularly in how material estimation, supplier rate comparisons, and BOQ preparation directly impact the success of construction projects. Each task helped to reinforce my understanding of the quantity surveyor's role in managing costs, ensuring project efficiency, and contributing to the overall success of the project. #Growthandlearning #Quantitysurveyingstudent #youngquantitysurveyor #QSintern

Coaching and development is a vital part of any industry. For example, I spent last weekend mentoring a new starter in my local McEatery, teaching them the McRopes so that one day they can be an extremely impactful member of the McTeam. It's why it's so vital to ensure proper coaching is provided alongside a defined career path, because without it there's little chance of progression, and any progression in your career feels more like luck than design. Luckily I'm working with a couple of drylining contractors in the Midlands who are looking for trainee/assistant Quantity Surveyors to join their team. The view is that in the long run these guys are going to run the commercial departments, so long as they have the minerals - it doesn't get much more defined than that does it? Sound like it could be worth a chat? Drop me a line on 07863304210 or nathan@construction-resources.co.uk We need to make trainee roles great again. Year 6: Joining South Africa’s Largest Contractor- A TOUGH START! I remember being so excited starting at my first construction role as a trainee foreman. It’s a nervy feeling starting a job while not fully knowing if you would be able to pull it off (like you said you would in the interview). Almost like imposter syndrome. What does a trainee actually do especially when in your mind you think you are more than what they are asking you to do? I remember my first project at St Augustine’s Hospital where a bigger stormwater drainpipe needed to be laid. And that was the job. A 10m pipe! I was given one guy to supervise and I don’t want to say I couldn’t even do that but it was a struggle for two reasons. One, Sandile was an experienced employee and there wasn’t anything I could tell or teach him about this task and secondly, I was extremely bored (and many times slept in the ablutions to pass the time). The project was circa R10k with one employee and I guess that was my challenge, I expected a big start. I was more excited when the company negotiated a R200k Travel clinic refurbishment. It was a quick-fire job, but I remember distinctly being sworn for wearing shorts and not representing the company with the prestige it was apparently known for. What a lesson that was as the director using expletives, reprimanded me that when the client sees me, they see the company and that I needed to represent #WBHO as the professional contractor that it is/was. Nothing prepared me for the verbal abuse I would get in this industry, and it was a baptism of fire as almost anybody on the projects I was transferred to, would swear me (almost just because) from foremen to QS’ to safety people, oy seemed like everybody. I felt like a punching bag and given my introverted disposition I sat many nights wondering if this industry was really for me. I was transferred to Parklands Hospital and learnt so much from my site agent Sanjeev (in self-management) as I was being groomed to be a finishing foreman working long hours and 24-hour shifts at a time. Construction in a hospital environment taught me about discipline and deadlines (especially when we refurbished a theatre, and a surgical operation was planned for the next day). There isn’t time to get tired. You focus, drive the teams and push on to ensure that 7am, the area can be sterilised and operated in. The year ended with an inconsolable relationship breakup when I was transferred to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg (Jhb) where I witnessed a murder on my first weekend in the place. What an introduction to Jhb! I will never forget thinking that Jhb is not for children. It was fast paced, where I would learn to how to drive, where I would heal (from the heartbreak) and where I would grow. A tough first year working in the building industry but I decided to chew the meat and spit out the bones. Quote: "Opportunities don't happen, you create them." — Chris Grosser

My Best Experience so far as a Quantity Surveyor I've had many great experiences as a Quantity Surveyor, but there's one that really stands out. One time, a client asked me to create a bill of quantity for a construction project. I'd done these before in school and during my internship, but this was my first real project. I was nervous, even though I knew what to do. I really wanted to do a fantastic job! To make sure I was on the right track, I asked a lot of experienced people in the field for advice. What surprised me was how willing they were to help! They answered all my questions patiently. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: Don't be afraid to ask for help when you're stuck. There are always people who have been there before and are happy to share their knowledge. Asking questions can really help us achieve more in any area of life. Every time I think about my first project and how I overcame my confusion by asking questions, I feel inspired to try new things. Do you agree that asking questions is important? Let me know what you think about my experience! #20dayslinkedinchallengewiththeproqs #quantitysurveyors #linkedInvisibility #bestexperiencebeingaquantitysurveyor
