It's one of the first videos we produced, but Peabody Public Schools is readying a big rollout in the new school year of our anti-bullying video. Josh Vadala, Ed.D. had a clear plan for this communication: reduce concerns of young parents, get their concerns to the right places, and reinforce the core values they've been building into their student community. This communication also has a clear return on investment: reducing time and resources in the wrong places while getting parent communications to the right places. Even better if we're alleviating concerns before that happens! Peabody also has this video ready to go in Spanish and Portuguese... what is your district doing to prepare students and young families for the new school year? #schoolpr #communications #publiceducation #antibullying #upstanders

It makes my heart sing when people want to talk TO and ABOUT teachers. Thanks to the fabulous team at Good Morning Washington (WJLA) for giving Chloe Kaplan and me a chance to do so! 🍎 This conversation is just the beginning of what I hope will be a bigger dialogue about mending and strengthening parent-teacher relationships. A few tips we shared: 1. BE GENEROUS IN YOUR ASSUMPTIONS. Credit to the great @brenebrown for this life-changing concept. It’s so easy to make negative assumptions, especially when we have only a limited view of others. But in most cases, parents and teachers are doing the best they can! It’s important to assume the best (and ask questions!) before assuming the worst. 2) ADOPT A WHOLE TEAM/WHOLE CHILD APPROACH. Any kid with a village behind them is better off. Unifying around kids’ needs and goals is how we build strong armies and care for them academically, socially, and emotionally. 3) BE RESPECTFUL OF TIME. When, as a teacher, did I have time to write emails? At 9pm and 5am, that’s when. Let’s help teachers preserve their precious energies by emailing only about the necessary stuff and granting some grace for late responses. And because parents are busy, maybe a little less communication from school? (Asking for me, the mom who somehow always misses an email.) #education #amorelearning #teachers #parents #strongrelationships #schools #learning

Family engagement is one of the most powerful tools we have as educators to support children’s learning and development. When schools and families work together, we create a strong foundation where students can thrive both academically and emotionally. Research from Dr. Karen Mapp shows that when these relationships are built on trust, respect, and shared responsibility, students are more motivated, perform better in school, and develop a deeper sense of belonging. In my book Why Every Child Needs a Village for Academic Success, I’ve seen firsthand the incredible impact that strong school-family partnerships can have. It’s not just about inviting families in, but truly making them part of the learning process. Educators who foster two-way communication and engage families in meaningful ways are creating lasting change. Every positive interaction builds the trust and partnership that helps students succeed. How can we, as educators, continue to empower families and strengthen the village that every child deserves?

Director - Restorative Practice specialising in Conflict Resolution, Conflict Prevention, Inclusion and Behaviour
We always start our whole school training by celebrating what a school is already doing well. Do you smile and welcome students into your classroom? Do you every contact parents to celebrate and not just to berate? Are you actively listening to students when they tell you a little about themselves? When you walk past a student on the corridor, do you smile and acknowledge them? Do you ask students how their weekend has been? Don’t dismiss the little things we do every day as educators that make connections, build relationships and make students feel welcomed. You are forging bonds, building communities and proactively developing relationships. Sometimes the simplest action can make the biggest difference to a child. #restorativepractice #relationalpractice #relationships #connection #community
