You might have heard about it already, but the blobs are coming! Tomorrow, Ethereum will undergo another major upgrade. The hardfork is estimated to take place at 3PM CET. The upgrade already went smooth and is live on several testnets, so everyone expects the upgrade to go live without hiccups on mainnet. Biggest change will be the roll-out of proto-danksharding, a rather strange term, aiming to enable scaling via layer2 scaling solutions. Layer 2's will be able to post "blobs" of data via a new transaction type on Ethereum, lowering the cost of submitting data to the chain. All sounds rather technical, but what it should mean for users is that transactions become a significantly cheaper and new use cases will be able to make use of blockchains connected to the Ethereum eco-system. Chains like Solana have been thriving lately because of low transaction fees, attracting a lot of users to use the chain for use-cases which are priced out on Ethereum. Solana is now the number 1 chain for stablecoin transfers, ahead of Ethereum and Tron. If you're interested to have a deeper look, L2beat provides a good overview of the various layer 2s which exist and how much they're being used today - https://lnkd.in/efKRCQbs #Ethereum #scaling #web3 #hardfork #dencun https://lnkd.in/eNH_X5Pm

Exciting news for the Ethereum ecosystem! The new #EIP-7781 proposal aims to significantly boost #Ethereum’s performance by reducing block creation times from 12 to 8 seconds, increasing overall throughput by 50%. This improvement could enhance decentralized exchanges like #Uniswap, lowering costs and improving efficiency by up to 22%. While this will drive faster transactions and improved user experiences, it could also increase hardware requirements for validators. If approved, this upgrade will be a major step forward for Ethereum’s scalability and efficiency. ref: https://lnkd.in/eS87bi-R

Current tailwinds for ETH: 1. Coinbase pushing its users (over 100 million verified users) onchain to Ethereum via Base L2. 2. The Ethereum Foundation continues to execute (The Merge, Shanghai upgrade, EIP4844, etc). The network is scaling in a modular format. 3. Network Effects. ETH dominates in terms of developers, developer tooling, standardization, liquidity, value locked, users (120 million non-zero wallets), fees. 4. Token Economics. Ethereum "burns" (buybacks) approximately 80% of user transactions — which can offset new issuance/consensus rewards paid to validators. The token had annualized deflation of -.38% in Q1. 5. Yield. Ethereum offers a real yield driven by it's usage (user fees) + network consensus rewards (offset by "buybacks") 6. Security & Decentralization. Per a recent study by Coin Metrics, it would be more costly to attack Ethereum than Bitcoin (though both would be impossible to attack). 7. ETH is generally uncorrelated to US equities. 8. Applications. Today there are over 7,300 apps building on Ethereum. 9. Capital Efficiency. There is more ETH onchain today (providing services, liquidity, used as collateral, etc) than at any point in the networks history. 10. The supply of ETH held on exchanges is currently at its lowest point since 2016. ---- I created The Ethereum Investment Framework to help you get up to speed as fast as possible, in a non-technical, data-driven, easy-to-follow format. Over the past year, a new primitive has taken the Ethereum ecosystem by storm: restaking. Restaking on platforms like Eigenlayer enables crypto infrastructure such as data availability layers, oracles, and DeFi apps to leverage the value of staked Eth for their economic security in exchange for protocol fees and rewards, giving additional utility to the world’s second-biggest digital asset. However, locked ETH is illiquid, limiting the utility of staking or restaking because stakers cannot quickly enter and exit positions or leverage their stake as collateral in DeFi protocols. Following EigenLayer’s rapid growth, many liquid restaking token protocols have emerged to offer a solution, totalling over $5.4bn in TVL at the time of writing. But for our Digital Asset team, one stood out - ether.fi With over $2.7bn in Eth of TVL, ether.fi has the largest adoption rate and TVL growth of any liquid staking token. Read more about why we invested in the exceptional team and the product they're building in our latest piece by Sep Alavi, Marthe Naudts, and Robin De Baets. #restaking #ethereum

Check out this research conducted by CoinShares on the anatomy of Ethereum usage and rationale of its investment strategy. Ethereum's usage has changed and advanced considerably since its inception, with utility deliverables and token transfers/transactions dominating the blockchain. #ETH & #USDT remain the most significant tokens in terms of transaction fees and scaling solutions such as L2's have helped support the wide variety of applications and use-cases to lower fees. The platform's future value will rely upon fostering sustainable, long-term infrastructure which its last major upgrade, #Pectra in late 2024, is looking to solidify. Read more about Pectra here: https://lnkd.in/gpnQRw-Y Crypto.com
We have just finished some exhaustive work on mapping Ethereum usage, summarised below: - The primary driver of ETH's value is demand for Ethereum transactions, particularly in applications and token transfers, rather than staking yield or other factors. - Ethereum usage is dominated by marketplace interactions, with UniSwap and other exchanges consistently generating the majority of transaction fees, highlighting speculation as a key utility. - Token transfers, particularly involving Ether and stablecoins, remain central to Ethereum's activity, with stablecoins playing an increasingly critical role. - While Ethereum's ecosystem has expanded, transaction fee demand is highly concentrated in a few use cases, raising concerns about the platform's long-term value and necessitating a focus on fostering sustainable on-chain utility.
