Semiconductor is booming. The computational demand doubles every 2-3 months, mainly driven by AI needs, while, computational speed doubles only every 2 years according to Moore's law, which is already reaching its limits due to Landauer's principle. NVIDIA is over the roof this year, and probably for the next upcoming years. Its market cap has increased by $500B in only 6 weeks (=Tesla's market cap), reaching a $1.8 trillion market cap as of today. Sam Altman of OpenAI has also realized the huge potential and needs to revolutionize semiconductors, and is in talks to raise nearly $7 trillion to boost AI chip production. In Europe, while a lot of lot of investment categories have been on a strong decline, Semiconductor's investment has been rising 22% over the last 12 months. Great read on how chipmaker Nvidia has become dominant in using artificial intelligence to design drugs, from which it’s built a $1 billion-plus revenue stream. In addition to selling chips, they also sell software to the industry and have a venture capital arm which invests in many AI startups in biotech, enabling them to get further entrenched. They’ve expanded from GPUs designed for video games to simulating how small molecules and proteins moved and interacted which then led to further advances. The energy at the NVIDIA conference, or as some are calling it the “AI Woodstck,” was incredible. Great to see leaders from our portfolio like Rendered.ai featured! Here are some of our takeaways:   1. NVIDIA’s moat is incredible and the ecosystem they have created is going to be difficult to displace. Not only do they have the best-in-class compute (see Blackwell GPU), but also CUDA and the growing Omniverse—being built to run off of it—create a reinforcing ecosystem with so many different ways to monetize. In a space that is fiercely competitive and lucrative, everyone is still chasing #NVIDIA. 2. The future of Industry and Robotics was another big theme—digital twins, synthetic data, and simulation being the future of product design, manufacturing, and operations. It’s no longer just about training #AI, but how companies can take the next step to fully digitize and leverage these technologies to unlock efficiency, improve performance, and create value for their enterprise. 3. Any company that isn’t positioning its platform, products, and operations to coincide with the future Nvidia envisions will be behind. I attended the Nvidia GTC (GPU Technology Conference) on March 21 at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. This is probably the most significant tech conference this year because of the impacts of Generative AI across various industries. During the conference, I had a chance to interact with executives, industry leaders, experts, and scientists, and I also had a chance to see the demo of some pretty cool Generative AI products and solutions. This conference gave me insights into where the various organizations and industries are looking to invest, the current technology trends, opportunities for organizations, and also the challenges facing them.   My key takeaways: Nvidia GPUs and Generative AI have opened up a huge tech market. Every industry and technology segment was present and wants a big piece of Generative AI technology, and they are betting huge on it. This has created many opportunities for companies, and if you are an organization looking to try Generative AI, now is the time before it's too late.   Challenges: The first thing every organization has to ask is, Are you ok with losing some of the control over your data and security requirements? This question is particularly important for regulated industries and has not been solved yet by technology. Also, because of the cost and complexity, there is a lack of know-how about this technology and its resources. So scaling up Generative AI initiative is still a challenge for organizations.   Some other important takeaways:  1. GenAI has opened up huge opportunities for start-up companies (products and services), and because of the unknowns in the technology, the companies that are willing to invest have a great chance to beat the competition. 2. Hyper-scalers like Microsoft, AWS, Google, Oracle, and Dell are desperate and betting huge. They are expecting Generative AI to be widely adopted in the near future, and they are getting ready for this. 3. Big-time manufacturing segment presence in the conference, and they have a huge demand for AI (and GPUs', of course) and use-cases.   Overall, I am excited to be part of this journey, and I can't wait to see how industries and organizations are going to adopt Generative AI technology.
