Recently Revfine asked its Industry Expert Panel the question: “What is your advice for using GDS as part of a hotel’s overall distribution strategy?” Here is my take: Globally, the GDS channel contributes to less than 5% of hotel roomnights. So, if leisure or social events like weddings are your main customer segments, then perhaps the GDS would be of lesser importance to your hotel. But if your hotel caters to the managed business travel and corporate meetings market, then the GDS is an important - even indispensable- distribution channel. All of the Travel Management Companies (TMCs) that serve Fortune 500 companies, as well as traditional travel agencies that typically serve the business travel needs of mid-size and smaller companies, use GDS for their hotel bookings. If your property caters to this customer segment, you need to be on the GDS and have a marketing strategy for this distribution channel.
