Since 2017, HDR has worked with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) to help them revitalize their Chalk River Laboratories site. The latest in a suite of three projects is the Science Collaboration Centre, an innovative and sustainable new facility providing central planning and collaboration space for CNL’s growing science and technology program. With a design set to meet federal requirements for net-zero carbon-ready facilities, the building features a six-story mass timber structure, reflecting its natural setting along the Ottawa River and honoring its logging history. Last week, I had the privilege of delivering my candidate's live speech at the AIA's Leadership Summit in Washington, DC. Along with other colleagues seeking national office, my remarks highlighted the myriad of complex challenges we, as a profession, are facing, but also offered an optimistic vision of how we architects can step in and lead. I'm pleased to share the following video taken by colleague, Lester Korzillius, FAIA, RIBA:

A big leap forward for Mass Timber and the planet! As we look for ways to reduce these impacts, HDR is embracing new methods of using existing materials — especially those that are renewable like mass timber. Use of this inexpensive, renewable resource in construction offers substantial benefits: it sequesters carbon, offers the ability to harvest forests in a way that promotes forest health, and can help to rebuild timber and wood product manufacturing industries and revitalize small communities. It’s also resilient, cost-effective, as strong as steel and concrete, and satisfies our need for biophilic connections.
