Seeking asylum is legal. Seeking asylum is a human right. Under Biden's latest restrictive policy most people who seek asylum are turned away and returned to harm. Even the asylum officers' union has spoken* out opposing the policy because the order “stands as a practical and symbolic contraction of the United States’ commitment to humanitarian legal obligations.” While speaking with Univision, Managing Attorney Paulina Reyes-Perariz shares that for those that make a difficult journey to the United States, the difficulties continue on this side of the border. By restoring full access to asylum, increasing ports of entry, and granting a federally-funded attorney for every person in immigration court, the administration could fix a failing system.
