When I watch scary movies I spend a lot of time holding a cushion in front of my face. Pathetic, I know. And the music doesn't help. It's designed to have us jumping up out of our seats or looking towards the dark corners of the room. For more on what it is about scary music that has this effect, go to the latest edition of my Discovering Music newsletter 👻 https://lnkd.in/ehgPdC2i _________________________________________________________________ 🎵I’m Dr Kate Paine. We tend to think—and be told—that the only way to truly be creative is to think outside of the box. But narrow down the options and you’re forced to focus just that bit more: think of it as like looking down a telescope instead of at the whole sky. For more and for some musical ways to practice creating within the box, check out the latest edition of the Discovering Music newsletter. https://lnkd.in/dJhG9vcQ #discoveringmusic #creativity #creativeprocess #howtothinkaboutmusic ___________________________________________________________________ 🎵I’m Dr Kate Paine. Why are we horrified the first time we hear a recording of our own voice? Why does it sound different to other people? A very big piece of this is the ongoing assessments of patients. Just popping a pair of headphones on grandma isn’t going to do anything except perhaps annoy her. Selecting the music, determining how it is going to effect and affect, setting the volume, the orchestration, the spatial location of speakers… To motivate movement and most importantly to motivate engagement with singing and making sounds. Breathing, articulation, pronounciation of words, the complexity of the narrative and what memories are being evoked. The level of precision determines the resulting benefits- and that data needs ongoing analysis to fine tune the resulting neuroplasticity and growth of new brain. BrainSing is a technology platform being worked on to do these things and more. We are seeking music therapist partners to aid in the development of a system to achieve specific documented results. Its been 10 years since Oliver Sacks introduced us to the power of music. Its time we started doing something about it at scale. #BrainSing

"Smile, though your heart is aching, Smile, even though it's breaking" Do you know who wrote the melody for the song Smile? Hint: he was an iconic star of silent movies (and much, much more). And he was also heavily influenced by some of his favourite classical music. For more on this beautiful song and to hear a recording of my version, visit the Discovering Music newsletter. https://lnkd.in/eZ78MiNs #discoveringmusic #creativity #creativeprocess #musicalmakeover _________________________________________________________________ 🎵I’m Dr Kate Paine. Have you ever tried writing a list of things that would blow your mind if they happened? Have you ever reviewed that list on a regular basis? And lastly, have you ever combined this process with a playlist of inspiring music? Many have done steps 1. Some have done steps 1 and 2. But very few have added the third step. When I read through my "mind-blowing list" of goals, I listen to Hans Zimmer's greatest hits. My mind drifts into possibilities for turning these lofty goals into a reality. The music motivates me to act now, organize my mind, create a blueprint, and go for it. If you haven't tried this yet. Do.

The Friday Way Post #18 Rick Rubin is a legend. Music lovers already know this, while casual music listeners may never know just how influential Rick is. My only two ringtones are songs produced by Rick - Rage Against The Machine doing Bob Dylan's Maggie's Farm and Johnny Cash doing Soundgarden's Rusty Cage. And with 40+ years in his game, Rick has written a book to espouse his learnings and wisdom - The Creative Act: A Way of Being. This book is full of great ideas, as are many of his interviews. A recent one with Rick Beato (see link in comments) has a great little snippet on his experience working with Linkin Park and 'the way': “𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸, 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘷𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦. 𝘐𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘸𝘢𝘺, 𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳? 𝘞𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘭 𝘸𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘵. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘦. 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸.” Another wise person (Kate Hopkins) has often said to me "𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦'𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘢 𝘸𝘢𝘺, 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘧 𝘪𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘯'𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘦𝘵". Keeping to the music theme, this idea that 'the way' is always there is endorsed in by Blondie lyrics "𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳, 𝘐'𝘮 𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘢 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘢, 𝘐'𝘮 𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘢 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘺𝘢, 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘺𝘢, 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘺𝘢, 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘺𝘢". Is there a way of doing something you could think differently about? Can you change your way to 'the way'? #spendlessthanyouearn #thereisalwaysaway #rickrubin #shoesoptional
