💵 I had a really interesting conversation yesterday with a senior account executive and we discussed the prospect of a counteroffer.. Classic question every recruiter asks on the first call. His response was: "Why would I take an offer from my current employer which is likely to be the maximum salary for my role in a bid to save me, when I can join a company on the starting salary for the role they are offering me." Well on that profound note, this is the example I will now be using when discussing counter offers with my candidates.

Think a counter-offer is a sign of how much your employer values you? It’s time for a reality check! ❌ While 62% of employers extend counter-offers, a surprising 80% of those who accept one still leave within six months. Just yesterday, I spoke with a senior lawyer who is back on the market, only a few months after accepting a counter-offer! 😲 The promises that convinced them to stay? Not one has been fulfilled… 😕 As a recruiter, how do I address this? I bring up the counter-offer conversation early in the recruitment process! This helps assess whether the candidate is truly ready for a change, or if they’re just using the opportunity to negotiate better terms internally. It gives them time to reflect on why accepting a counter-offer might not serve them in the long run. ⏳ It’s in my clients' best interest, ensuring they don’t get blindsided by candidates dropping out of the process and landing them back at square one. Here’s why: 1️⃣ Counter-offers are often a knee-jerk reaction. It’s not about improving your situation—it’s about avoiding disruption for the employer. They don’t want the hassle of replacing you or explaining the gap to their team. 2️⃣ Accepting a counter-offer can damage your professional standing. Your loyalty could be questioned, and your long-term prospects with the company may be undermined. How would your colleagues react if they found out? 3️⃣ A counter-offer won’t address the core reasons you considered leaving.
