Back to work on Monday after a fortnight largely spent sunning myself and following some outstanding sport in France, to receive a further extremity pleasant surprise which was some way beyond unexpected - pic attached. It’s been followed by some very generous comments and emails from a number of colleagues. I’m fortunate enough to work with some very good people who are progressing through apprenticeship/study programmes at different levels. It’s a privilege to see their development, and whilst my ability to assist in that is extremely small indeed, any help along the path is a good thing to offer and something really nice to be recognised for. I’m looking forward to seeing where and how far their capabilities might take them - a very long way in many cases. I don’t post much here on the basis that I’m at the opposite end of the scale - not least chronologically - to a lot of these people, much closer to the end than the beginning, and don’t feel I have that much worthwhile to say. Graduation was decades ago in the late eighties (‘gulp’) at which point encouragement to gravitate towards education was resisted strongly as a) I assessed myself as the wrong personally type to pursue it (and those who have encountered me in the time since will confirm that I’m really not ‘people-y’) and b) my view was that you needed the right kind of individual to take on something as important as a role of that nature. If there’s any lesson for me to take, I think it’s probably that the skills and capabilities you develop over the years equip you to do things (albeit on a small scale) in later life which you might not have considered possible in earlier ones, that you can and do keep learning and that change is possible, probably inevitable in some ways, and does happen. Where are our Apprentices? Again this question surfaces in another state. Yesterday I had the privilege of visiting William Angliss and sitting on the Cookery Industry Advisory Board Group Meeting on behalf of Ovolo Hotels alongside program leaders, talented owners, and incredible chefs from the industry. Our collaboration aims to ensure relevant teaching and placements, as well as provide advice on new skills and knowledge by the graduates. Our collective concern that dominated the conversation is the alarming decline in apprenticeships and school leavers pursuing careers as chefs and also within hospitality & tourism , not only in Victoria, NSW but across every other state in Australia. This decline is a pressing issue that demands our attention as leaders in the hospitality industry. We all know that the future of our industry relies on a fresh influx of talent and a vibrant pool of skilled individuals ready to embrace the challenges of tomorrow. Recent published statistics have highlighted the urgency of the situation. How do we together, turn the tide and create an enticing environment for young Australians to pursue apprenticeships and rewarding hospitality careers. What’s the ACTION PLAN, and how can we contribute? I don't have all the answers, but I know that collaboration is the absolute key here and with a sense of urgency. There needs to be more focus on Integrating vocational training, apprenticeships into school curricula, expanding vocational course offerings and programmes that targets & provides insights & guidance to school leavers, along with school career counsellors whilst we as industry and educational providers continue to develop comprehensive campaigns showcasing our sectors diverse, fabulous, never boring opportunities. It is crucial that we, as a united industry, continue to speak up, support, and raise questions regarding government initiatives. By doing so, we can all work together to ensure that the numbers for enrolments across Australia, pivot and start trending in a positive direction. 🎓 We're quickly heading into the time of year where those who look after graduate intake programmes will be at their busiest. End of August, early September is prime time for graduate recruitment, and its important to partner with a venue finding expert who really understands these events. Top tips from Louise are: 🔢 While an accountancy firm might want to recruit 650 graduates, the reality is the number may well be more like 500. Make sure you work with suppliers who understand you need a degree of flexibility - look for flexible minimum numbers and a portion of bedrooms on an allocation basis. Graduates may well have more than one offer on the table, change is likely! 🏨 Look for a venue where your school or university leavers can all be under one roof. There is a duty of care towards graduates, you'll want to make sure they're looked after and not scattered around several venues, especially in a city. Of course some venues that are not city centre based like Warwick Conferences offers everything in one location, so this is a good alternative. 🥪 The usual three course sit down meal option doesn't work well for grad intake programmes. Often they'll be working in the evening so something like buffet or grazing boards are a more flexible way to ensure everyone is kept fed and refreshed in a way which works for them.
