A reminder to make sure you submit entries into our Urban Development Institute of New Zealand UDINZ Photography Competition 2024. Much of what UDINZ achieves, results from the (multi-disciplinary) professionals in our wider network leaning in to contribute their expertise for the benefit of the sector and NZ Inc, rather than a direct personal or organisational benefit (although there often is mana that accrues from that!). It’s no different in this instance. Images are a great way of reinforcing the story of Urban form here in Aotearoa. This is an “all comers” competition where professionals and enthusiastic amateurs are both encouraged to participate. If you don’t want to contribute your work, that’s fine, but we do welcome and thank all that do. The overarching theme of this competition is “Urban Development Photography distinctly of Aotearoa New Zealand”. Merit shall be determined entirely at our judging panel’s discretion based on their perception of the appropriateness of the image to the category in which it is entered and the quality of “story” told by the image. It is not technical photography or any particular style of photography sought, but the story of our people and places here in Aotearoa we are after, so get out there and start snapping or scour the hard drives for images you'd like to enter.

Kime Ranch is a pedestrian-friendly community that builds on and aligns with the Town of Parker’s small-town character while providing homes near significant open space, regional civic facilities, and the downtown core. The project includes 150 new homes, a developed trail system, significant open space, and a 3.6-acre central park built into a slope. Prioritizing the environment and integrating the neighborhood park into, rather than onto, the land decreases the amount of soil removed from the site. With less soil removal needed, the trips taken by trucks hauling soil from the site are significantly decreased and the associated carbon emissions reduced. The terraced walls on the south side of the park maximize the amount of retained soil and provide opportunities for a variety of spaces such as ornamental gardens, a gaming table area, and varied gathering spaces. Furthermore, concrete cows that existed on the site have been preserved and artfully repurposed to be a permanent fixture on the SW corner of the park. Additional features of the park include an elevated multi-use field that provides a sledding slope to the west and play structures fitted for all ages. #pcsgroupco #landplanning #urbandesign #landscapedesign #landscapearchitecture #landarch #3Dvisualization #animation #parkdesign #parks #neighborhoodpark #KimeRanch #parkercolorado #townofparker

Devoted to Christian faith | Prov 31 Art, Literature and Architecture MISS AFRICA 2024 FINALIST HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST
Gautana is blending a portrait photography, architectural imagery, and historical references. The central figure in the portrait is holding a powerful, self-assured person who represents a connection between identity, culture, and history. The architectural elements suggest a setting that could range from colonial to modern urban environments, possibly reflecting themes of heritage, legacy, and the passage of time. The juxtaposition of old and new architecture, alongside images that evoke a sense of history (like the African Time clock and vintage photographs), in suggesting a dialogue between past and present. The use of sepia tones ties the elements together, adding a nostalgic or historical lens to the image. I am exploring themes of identity, memory, and the intersection between personal and collective histories within urban environments. I am also commenting on the resilience and evolution of cultural identities in the face of modernity and historical shifts.

Architecture is more than designing buildings and homes. A truly talented designer is including elements of nature and the surroundings into the design and maximizing the benefits that our natural resources can offer. Sun studies to measure the location of the sign at certain times of the day to maximize efficient of HVAC systems and capitalize on sunlight, reducing electric usage and costs. Using trees for cooling effects is another great way to accomplish the same thing!
Many cities are breaking temperature records early this summer. Trees can help mitigate this by cooling their surroundings by up to 12°C through shade and moisture. Additionally, urban trees support biodiversity, reduce air pollution, prevent floods, and improve well-being. Do you think your city needs more trees? 📸: Ecosia #architecture #design #tree #nature #photography #creative #landscape

Winter is here....and so are interesting insights into how we experience our public realm. https://lnkd.in/g5iHJfuY
🌨️❄️ WINTER IS HERE ❄️🌨️ Every winter, the fresh snow unveils the true nature of our streets and roads—over-designed for cars, making them faster and more dangerous. It also reveals the immense potential to reclaim space for people and public life. Let's embrace the power of snow to reshape our urban landscapes! ❄️🏙️ 🚸 Have you heard of 'sneckdowns'? It's a fascinating urban design concept where planners leverage snowfall to observe how roads are used by cars and identify unused spaces that can be repurposed for pedestrians. This principle can be applied to public spaces, helping us understand how citizens navigate and interact with their environment. 👇 Check out this fantastic animation and example of a sneckdown created by Oto Ozols! Let's harness the power of snow to drive positive change in our streets, public spaces, and workplaces. ❄️💼

Buildings are complex endeavors that must balance many priorities, but ultimately their biggest responsibility is providing safe and healthy spaces for occupants. There is a growing movement toward purposeful design of healthy buildings, whether that's for schools, offices, health care or anyplace people gather. I wrote about this trend, and how precast/prestressed concrete can contribute to healthy building design, in the latest issue of Ascent from the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. Check it out! #PrecastProtectsLife #HealthyBuildings #sustainability #indoorairquality #acoustics #precastconcrete https://lnkd.in/ggDRMhBP

Public art is transforming the urban landscape, offering more than just visual appeal. Developers across the country are integrating vibrant artworks into their projects, and it's making a significant impact. Art in real estate projects has become a powerful tool for increasing foot traffic and engagement. For example, murals in commercial areas have been shown to boost visitor numbers by up to 43%. Art has become a strategic asset in real estate, blending culture and commerce in a way that benefits both communities and businesses. #UrbanArt #CommercialRealEstate
