The Maryland Economic Development Corporation and the Maryland Department of Transportation have released two Requests for Proposals to study new development at stations along the MARC Penn Line in the Baltimore-Washington corridor and to look for innovative ideas to support investment around light rail and subway stations in the Baltimore region. These efforts represent an incredible opportunity for impact in creating vision and addressing market barriers related to Transit Oriented Development. Stealing the words of David A. Zaidain, AICP - Be a part of it! The official Requests for Proposals for both studies are available for review here: https://lnkd.in/eZA6_dKi. Responses are due by September 12, 2023 for the Penn Line, and September 19, 2023 for Baltimore Region. Questions related to the RFP's can still be submitted.

I get to touch so many interesting projects at the Maryland Economic Development Corporation but the people I get to work with on those projects make the work that much more rewarding. I spent a lovely afternoon at Laurel Park for the Maryland Million races with our partners at the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation (AAEDC). I even made some new friends. Relationships make the world go round and they certainly enrich my life. Thanks Amy Gowan and Wesley MacQuilliam for including me in the day.

Fantastic evening at the ULI Wavemakers Awards last night celebrating The Packing House project. The Packing House is an active, mixed-use development focused on regional economic opportunities connected to agriculture, aquaculture, environmental technologies, and tourism. This culturally and historically significant building was the last remaining factory from what once was a 60-acre campus of the Phillips Company’s empire of vegetable and food packing businesses, which once employed thousands of people in Cambridge. The PBS documentary Unpacking Cambridge: A Story of Rebirth and Reconciliation tells the story of the Packing House and Cambridge. I am most certainly biased, but it’s a beautiful piece of storytelling. Give it a watch!

With a flurry of meetings, events, and summits late spring into early summer, there have been so many wonderful opportunities to represent Maryland Economic Development Corporation and connect with colleagues, partners, clients and friends. The Greater Baltimore Committee meetings and events have been a few of my favorite. Between the people and the discussions around how place-based strategies fit into broader regional economic growth goals, I am grateful to GBC for creating spaces for gathering. Here is a snapshot from the Annual Meeting, June Partner & Member Meeting and the Baltimore Region Investment Summit. Any day that starts with a 96-count box of Crayola Crayons is going to be a good day. An inspired half day working with The Verve Partnership, bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park, and Impact Principals. They convened 30 or so entrepreneurs, researchers, economic development professionals, placemakers, elected officials, and more to help build consensus and generate ideas around these Visioning Goals for bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park: * Create a place that infuses and speaks to the mission of the park and the university. * Provide a platform of engagement for people to influence how effective and efficient spaces that are intentionally designed impact the overall goals of the university. * Design efficient and thoughtful spaces that reduce stress, facilitate engagement, foster cross-collaboration and influence behaviors encountered during any given day. * Create client/community facing areas that are accessible, efficient, and barrier-free to support a variety of events, programs and services. For the final exercise, Group Two focused on Vibrancy & Visibility through a visualizing collage. Our creativity and conversation focused on how to design a space that brings out the vibrancy within its individual users vs just focusing on vibrancy of the physical space itself. How a space can be designed as modern art to allow the users to be attracted to and interpret the design features in their own ways. It was a delight to join so many amazing minds and lend my placemaking perspective. These are the days that I feel most connected and grateful for the work I get to lead at Maryland Economic Development Corporation. Thank you, Kelly Ennis, for inviting me. The Verve Partnership commitment to people, purpose, place radiates from Kelly and team. I consider golf to be human connection magic, especially when playing in a tournament to support a good cause. There is something that happens when you spend 3+ hours with a small group. The fresh air, how the conversation gradually shifts from high-level to deeper as the day progresses AND I can’t leave out the celebrating and commiserating that comes with the good shots and hilariously bad shots. Shared experience is a powerful bonding agent. Maryland Economic Development Corporation was happy to support Community Assistance Network, Inc. at their Annual Golf Tournament. It was a productive day on the golf course with Tom Sadowski and Tiffany Harvey.

I walk by the National Aquarium most days on my walk to the Maryland Economic Development Corporation office. My walking commute is a meander around the Harbor East waterfront, a cut across the Inner Harbor and up into the Central Business District. I could take 10 different routes but the Aquarium has become a favorite, grounding moment of my commute. I jumped at the opportunity to join my MEDCO colleagues and the The BWI Business Partnership, Inc. for an onsite meeting. I am always impressed and inspired by the conservation and community work being carried out daily by the National Aquarium team, thanks for hosting us! The site contains approximately thirteen (13) developable acres and is centrally located in Glen Burnie, Maryland within ¼ mile of a light rail transit station. Additionally, it features Sustainable Community Overlay zoning which allows for a wide range of uses and densities. Interested? I may not fall into the Young Leaders category for ULI Baltimore, but I had an incredible time joining their fun to see the latest progress for the Clipper Construction project on Beason Street. The interior demo alone has made a dramatic difference from when it was formerly operating as a driveshaft repair facility. I can’t wait to see the progress as they transform this Locust Point building into a café (Cup & Co), coworking space, and the Clipper Construction headquarters. #reuse #community #clipperconstruction #ulibaltimore #development #transformation

A morning well spent discussing Transit Oriented Development (TOD). As part of our work with MDOT to better understand market conditions, barriers and opportunities related to TOD in the Baltimore region AND how to incentivize and encourage TOD at meaningful densities, MEDCO hosted a developer forum. Engaging with potential private, institutional and nonprofit partners is critical to expand our understanding on how best to support TOD in the region. Thank you to the many partners that shared their valuable time, perspectives, and knowledge with us today. Leading conversations from infrastructure funding to TOD and beyond, MEDCO is uniquely positioned to bring together public and private partners to tackle pressing development related challenges and opportunities. What topic should the next Developer Forum tackle? David A. Zaidain Steven Reilly Matt D'Amico
