The Twists & Turns of APPE Rotations & how to navigate them Unexpected things are going to happen while on your rotation Your goal should be to find a way through those challenges I think these twists and turns can be really powerful in preparing you for life as a practitioner So, it’s important to keep a few things in mind : 💡Remain Flexible and Adaptable: Clinical rotations can be unpredictable, with schedules, patient cases, and learning opportunities constantly changing. Stay flexible and adaptable to unexpected circumstances, adjusting your approach and mindset as needed to make the most of each rotation. 💡Clear & Effective Communication Communicate openly and proactively with preceptors, supervisors, and colleagues. If you encounter challenges or unexpected twists during your rotation, don’t hesitate to seek guidance and support. Your preceptor will appreciate this skill even if they are poor communicators. Don’t forget that your EE department is a great resource to help you navigate or mediate a difficult conversion 💡Reflect & Learn Take time to reflect on your experiences during clinical rotations, both the successes and the challenges. As a Med SLP for 15 years, I've seen the field evolve and expand in so many ways. But if I’m being honest, so many of my clinical peers and even SLP graduate students don’t have a full grasp of what all a #MedSLP does! So let’s get into it 👇👇👇 Almost 40% of SLPs work in healthcare settings, including hospitals, outpatient facilities, and residential care facilities. About 20% are in private practice, which is where a huge level of autonomy and flexibility comes in. But what exactly does a day in the life of a Med SLP look like?? Well, it varies greatly depending on the setting, patient acuity, and job description. Nonetheless, ALL of our days are fast-paced and dynamic, with each patient case presenting new ways for innovation and growth as an SLP. We serve patients across the lifespan, from premature infants in the NICU to individuals in end-of-life hospice care. And even though we aren’t *technically* counselors, counseling plays a crucial role in our job – helping patients and families navigate life-altering conditions and treatments. BUT did you know that Med SLPs can be found in the operating room or the burn unit?? Yeah, me neither, until I started working in the hospital. 🤷🏼♀️ Here’s the deal, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to being a Med SLP. Whether you prefer acute care or private practice, specializing or remaining a generalist, the choice is yours. It's all about finding where you can make the greatest impact and feel fulfilled in your career! And if you haven’t found that special spot in this field that just feels right for you – don’t sweat it. Oftentimes, it takes YEARS to find what we truly love (heck, it might even change a few times!) 💛 If you think you might need some outside perspective on navigating your career and, I have EXCITING news! This week & ONLY this week, the Collective is OPEN for enrollment! Comment “COLLECTIVE” & I’ll send you some info on how to get enrolled so you can get equipped with the tools, resources, and community you need to elevate your clinical career! #medslp #slp #slpmentorship

What if the destination is the journey it takes to get there? You’ve graduated. You’ve done the essays, gone to clinical, taken the tests and passed them all! The hard work, late hours, missed parties have all paid off. You’ve achieved your goal of becoming a #respiratorytherapist What’s next? Where do I set my sights now? Attaining my #adultcritcalcarespecialist was my first major goal after working a couple of years in the hospital. I studied, took the test, passed. Check. Then I wanted to present at a local conference. I researched, prepared, took a deep breath and presented. Check. Then I wanted to teach. I fell in love with unlocking newer minds to difficult topics. I went to school for my bachelor’s degree, honed my precepting skills, applied and obtained a position as the Director of Clinical Education! Check. I’m satisfied right? I have achieved the goals I wanted. Why do I feel as though something is missing? You know what I miss. I miss the journey, the challenge. I crave that feeling of taking on something new. I have nothing to prove. My destination is the journey. I want to know the #why. I want to embrace learning. Make #thejourney your destination and you will have already achieved success. #TheWorldNeedsMoreRTS National Board for Respiratory Care - NBRC American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) #NBRCAmbassador

I had the privilege of presenting at the annual RAISE Network (Researching, Advancing & Inspiring Student Engagement) conference. It was great to share insights from my work on the INSPIRE research project, titled “Student-Led Development of the Physiology Curriculum in MBBS Medicine at the Hull York Medical School”. The presentation format was new to me and was organised as campfire conversations. This provided a more relaxed atmosphere, allowing for a productive Q+A session. I found some of the questions surrounding positionality and inclusion thought-provoking, giving me a lot to talk about with my peers on the project. The feedback on my talk included a very encouraging comment from a Quality Enhancement and Standards Specialist at the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education on how the project is an example of best practice in HE, additionally suggesting that we contact the University's local Quality Assurance team to share this with them. Engaging with individuals in diverse roles across higher education – from quality assurance professionals to student support staff – offered me a broader perspective on student engagement. In addition to the campfire conversations, the conference had some incredible keynote speakers. The MedRace committee from the University of Leicester delivered a compelling talk on equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in medical schools and education. The team’s work on developing surgical scrub caps better suited to braided or locked hair and one designed for people who wear hijabs was encouraging and positive. They spoke about how they created student-led microaggression and bystander training sessions which on reflection allow for a more relatable and engaging way to teach these important topics. Dr. Iwi Ugiagbe-Green's opening keynote focused on the important themes of systemic and institutionalised discrimination in education. It highlighted how systems in education have unfair rulesets that often create barriers for students with non-normative identities. This talk introduced me to the concept of the myth of meritocracy and the idea of a hidden curriculum frequently inaccessible to those without an implicit understanding of educational systems, from secondary schools to higher education. I was left reflecting on this statement: “Equity work should seek to fix the system (that sets the rules) - not focus on 'fixing the student'”. I want to extend my thanks to the team at RAISE and the University of Leicester for inviting us to present at this conference. #RAISE24
