On a mission to transform parental leave pay in the UK 💪

Nugget Savings in the Sunday papers yesterday 🙌 Katie Binns wrote a fantastic piece about Keeping In Touch (KIT) days and how new mothers can be let down by their employers through minimum pay and late payment 😩 KIT days should be a CRUCIAL tool for employers to hold on to their staff returning to work after maternity leave. With 85% of mothers leaving employment within 3 years of having a child, staff turnover is costly 💸 to employers. Encouraging new mothers to ease back into the office with KIT days, build up confidence again and look forward to returning to working life 👩💻 should be common sense. Devaluing your employees by paying them way under their day rate and then with holding payment for months = terrible business.

EXCL: New mothers are missing out on thousands of pounds of pay and being left out of pocket for weeks due to failings of their employers during maternity leave. Employees can work up to 10 Keeping In Touch (Kit) days during maternity leave - allowing women to stay up-to-date with changes at work and crucially earn at a time when their incomes will have dropped. HOWEVER. There is no guarantee an employer will offer them nor a legal requirement on how much employees should be paid for Kit days, with only national minimum wage guaranteed. Parental leave rights group Nugget Savings told me there's 'lawlessness' in how Kit days are managed by some firms. I spoke to two women at two different employers who had planned to use their Kit days to keep their career on track and plug the gaps in their earnings - yet both ended up having a terrible exerience and being too intimidated to raise the issue with their employer for fear of being labelled difficult. I'd be keen to talk to more women about their poor experiences of Kit days (can be anonymous) Thanks to Katie Guild and Harriet M. of Nugget Savings and Jonothan Scollen and Julie Temple for their input. #maternity #maternitypay #workingmothers #women #womenandfinance https://lnkd.in/eqpA_keB
